In the series' inaugural episode, it was revealed that the depletion of fossil fuels and growing environmental apprehensions had prompted the phasing out of vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines. The episode then introduced viewers to two main characters: Ren, an MFG Angel, and Kanata Rivington, a Japanese British youngster staying at her house.

Paying a visit to one of the shrines, which Ren had a hunch might be the location in the picture, Kanata proceeded to recount the tale of how his parents first crossed paths during his mother's teenage years, fell deeply in love, and eventually brought him into existence.
