Highlights
The forthcoming expansion for Destiny 2, known as The Final Shape, is set to unveil an exciting new location named The Pale Heart. This intriguing destination will undergo transformations triggered by the actions of players and the culmination of the captivating storyline.
Destiny 2's destinations, which are open-world spaces, provide players with distinct views, engaging activities, and enticing rewards. These destinations have continuously grown and evolved in each expansion and season. In the upcoming expansion called The Final Shape, players can expect the beloved Tower from the original Destiny to make a comeback, along with the charismatic Cayde-6. More information regarding this exciting expansion will be unveiled in the coming months.
The official Destiny 2 showcase unveiled The Final Shape, which includes The Pale Heart, a dynamic destination that changes as players progress through the campaign. This upcoming expansion marks the culmination of a ten-year storyline pitting the paracausal Light against the Darkness. However, even after The Final Shape, Destiny 2 will continue with episodic content.
Destinations in Destiny 2 are expansive open-world areas featuring unique landscapes, enemy factions, activities, vendors, and exclusive rewards. The game initially launched with four locations: the European Dead Zone, Nessus, Titan, and Io. Each subsequent expansion added new destinations to explore. Some zones and their corresponding content were temporarily removed but are now making a comeback in Destiny 2's current seasonal updates. In addition to advancing the storyline, these open-world spaces offer group activities and hidden areas with special rewards tied to the expansion or season.
During the official showcase, Bungie unveiled The Pale Heart as a new destination in the upcoming expansion. Described as the first linear destination, The Pale Heart of the Traveler will dynamically change based on players' actions throughout the campaign and undergo significant transformations once the ongoing storyline concludes. The showcase provided glimpses of gameplay within The Pale Heart, showcasing its unique and peculiar geometry, as well as how guardians will experience its immense scale through parkour. The developers explained how the Witness's Monolith influences The Pale Heart of the Traveler, resulting in an architectural mix of rearranged environmental assets that align with the cosmic horror themes that inspire Destiny 2.
While destinations changing based on player actions is not a new feature, previous expansions have seen some changes following narrative conclusions. The introduction of The Dreaming City, for example, remains one of the most popular post-campaign activities in Destiny 2 after Uldren Sov's demise. However, the developers stress the importance of completing the campaign to fully explore The Pale Heart, which is said to "open up" according to Design Lead Matt McConnell.
The extent of the areas to explore and secrets to discover is currently unclear. However, it has been confirmed that the original Tower from Destiny will make a comeback in The Final Shape, along with the former Hunter Vanguard, Cayde-6. Bungie has pledged to share additional information about the location and the rest of the expansion in the coming months leading up to its release. Destiny 2 is accessible on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
