Blizzard has announced that World of Warcraft will receive a new ping system in Patch 10.1.7 later this year. The company has also shared the inspiration behind this addition and how it could enhance the gameplay experience. However, concerns have been raised by players regarding the potential for misuse of the ping system by griefers and toxic individuals.
While the release of the ping system is scheduled for Patch 10.1.7, the upcoming update for World of Warcraft, Patch 10.1.5 titled "Fractures in Time," will launch next week. This major update includes a range of exciting content, such as the new megadungeon "Dawn of the Infinite," the Augmentation Evoker specialization, class balance improvements, and quality-of-life enhancements to various game systems. With these substantial additions, it is evident that "Fractures in Time" is not a minor patch for World of Warcraft. As the development team focuses on the release of this update, they are committed to improving the gameplay experience for World of Warcraft players.
In an interview with Maximum from Team Liquid, a member of the World First Mythic Abberus raid team, Morgan Day, the associate game director of World of Warcraft, disclosed that Patch 10.1.7 would introduce a new contextual ping system. This innovative system would allow guilds and raid groups to communicate dynamically during battles, guiding team members on their positions and areas to avoid. It is distinct from the existing minimap pings within the game. Day mentioned that players will have the ability to place contextual pings on both friendly and enemy players, as well as the world itself, and there will be various options available for usage. The inspiration behind this upcoming ping system originates from the ping systems in League of Legends, Dota 2, and Apex Legends.
Blizzard has experience with Overwatch 2's contextual ping system. However, some World of Warcraft players are worried that toxic players may spam and misuse the system. Nevertheless, a few players remain optimistic that there will be options to disable the contextual ping system or restrict its usage to raid or group leaders in instanced content. The public test realm (PTR) will soon offer the opportunity to test Patch 10.1.7, where players can provide feedback on the contextual ping system. Patch 10.1.7 is scheduled for a fall release window according to the World of Warcraft: Dragonflight roadmap. It is uncertain whether Blizzard will continue to take player feedback into account to address any concerns regarding the upcoming ping system.
World of Warcraft is available now for PC.
