In the Pokemon universe, Koffing and Weezing, both Poison-types, are famous for emitting toxic and explosive gas. Originally found in the Kanto region, these Pokemon have now been introduced to the Teal Mask in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Trainers can now capture their own Koffing or Weezing in Kitakami, the location featured in the Teal Mask and the first part of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero expansion pass.
Considering the abundance of Poison-type Pokemon in Paldea, trainers may opt for alternatives to the Koffing line in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Nevertheless, Kitakami boasts its own Pokedex, which adds an additional 200 entries for trainers to complete. Capturing Koffing and Weezing is just one aspect of the 200 new and returning Pokemon included in the Gen 9 Pokedex.
Where to Find Koffing
Koffing spawns exclusively on Oni Mountain, primarily at the Crystal Pool and Infernal Pass. While they can also be found at Infernal Pass, it is easier to locate them at Crystal Pool. Trainers can begin their ascent up Oni Mountain as soon as they team up with Kieran and set out to find the three signboards scattered around Kitakami. By progressing through the storyline, players will be guided to the second signboard situated at Kitakami Hall. From there, they will need to climb Oni Mountain.
To unlock a convenient fast-travel point, make your way to the summit of Oni Mountain and interact with the sign adjacent to the bridge at Crystal Pool.
To increase your chances of catching Koffing, it's recommended to have three gym badges. Please note that using specialized Poke Balls with higher catch rates based on Pokemon types will not have any impact on capturing Koffing. Instead, it is advisable to employ a Quick Ball or have a Pokemon that can gradually reduce Koffing's HP before attempting to catch it with a Great Ball.
In addition, if you do not have access to the Teal Mask DLC, there are alternative methods to obtain Koffing. You can either trade for it or transfer it from Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, Pokemon GO, or Sword/Shield using Pokemon HOME.
What Level Does Koffing Evolve
How to Get Galarian Weezing
Weezing can be obtained by evolving Koffing, which occurs at level 35. To expedite the leveling process, it is efficient to utilize Exp. Candies or Rare Candy. If Koffings are captured after completing the main story, they will already have surpassed their level for evolution. In this case, simply increasing its level by one will initiate the evolution.
In Sword/Shield, Weezing gained a regional variant: Galarian Weezing.
To obtain a Galarian Weezing for Scarlet/Violet, players can transfer one from Sword/Shield.
Transfer Koffing from Scarlet/Violet and evolve it in Sword/Shield.
Trade using Link Trade. Requires a Nintendo Online Membership Subscription.
Here's how to evolve a Scarlet/Violet Koffing into Galarian Weezing:
Place Koffing in a PC Box in Scarlet/Violet. Save the game, then exit.
Open Pokemon HOME on the Switch, and choose Scarlet/Violet.
Move Koffing to a Basic Box, then Save and Exit.
Open Sword/Shield in HOME, and transfer the Koffing from the Basic Box to a SwSh PC Box. Save and exit.
Close out of Pokemon HOME, open Sword/Shield on the main screen.
Place Koffing in the party, and level it up to 35 to evolve it into Galarian Weezing.
Put the newly-evolved Weezing back into the PC Box, then save and exit.
Return to the HOME menu in order to transfer Weezing from Pokémon Sword and Shield back to Pokémon Scarlet/Violet.
Alternatively, trainers have the option of capturing a Galarian Weezing (found in the Slumbering Weald) in Pokémon Sword and Shield and transferring it to Pokémon Scarlet/Violet. However, the Galarian Weezing will not have the same trainer ID as the trainer in Pokémon Scarlet/Violet.
Is Weezing Worth Using? (Which Weezing is Better?)

Special Attack: | 85 |

Despite possessing impressive defensive capabilities, Weezing's lackluster Speed and HP render it ill-suited for the roles of both tank and attacker. It is worth noting that Weezing's recommended Natures come at the expense of its Attack stat. Furthermore, while its Attack growth surpasses its Special Attack by 5 base points, Weezing's move pool primarily consists of special moves. As a result, trainers may wish to prevent Weezing from experiencing a decline in its Special Attack growth.
The following moves are highly recommended for both Weezings:
Sludge Bomb, which both Weezings can learn once they evolve, is undeniably their top-notch Poison-type move. With a perfect 100% accuracy, it boasts an impressive power of 90 and also carries a chance of poisoning the target.
Trainers have the option to teach Toxic or Will-O-Wisp to their Pokémon using a TM. Toxic poisons the target severely, resulting in increased damage each turn. On the other hand, Will-O-Wisp inflicts a burn, causing continuous damage while also reducing the power of the target's physical attacks by half.
If players have a Galarian Weezing on their team, it would be beneficial to include the move Strange Stream. This Fairy-type move has a 20% chance of confusing the target.
Kantonian Weezing can utilize Dark Pulse or Assurance for coverage against Psychic-type Pokemon. Additionally, including Flamethrower in Galarian Weezing's moveset provides advantageous coverage against the majority of Fire-type Pokemon. It is worth noting that due to its dual Poison/Fairy-type, Galarian Weezing is vulnerable to Steel-type moves, unlike regular Weezing.
Regrettably, Weezing's TM learnset is limited, mainly consisting of special moves. It lacks diversity beyond Fire and Dark-type moves, although it can learn Psybeam (Psychic-type) and Thunderbolt (Electric-type). Nevertheless, these moves do not effectively cover any of Weezing's vulnerabilities, so their usefulness may be overstated.
Additionally, Weezing has the ability to learn moves like Spite and Pain Split through Egg Moves. Utilizing the Mirror Herb, players only need to ensure there is an available slot in Weezing's move set and have another Pokemon with the desired move. Simply have Weezing hold the Mirror Herb, engage in a leisurely picnic, exit and review Weezing's summary to see if the move has been "shared."
Pokemon Scarlet & Violet are available for Nintendo Switch.
Editor's P/S
As a long-time fan of the Pokémon franchise, I am thrilled to see the return of Koffing and Weezing in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. These two Pokémon have always been some of my favorites, and I am excited to see how they have been updated for the new generation.
The evolution of Koffing into Weezing is a relatively simple process, but it can be a bit tricky to find the right Koffing to evolve. Koffing can be found in the wild on Oni Mountain, and it will evolve into Weezing at level 35. However, if you want to evolve a Galarian Weezing, you will need to transfer a Koffing from Pokémon Sword and Shield and evolve it in that game.
Overall, I am very happy with the way that Koffing and Weezing have been implemented in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. They are both powerful Pokémon that can be a valuable asset to any team. I am looking forward to using them in my own playthrough of the game.
