Network Disputes Candace Cameron Bure's Representation, Claims Great American Family CEO Bill Abbott

Great American Family CEO Bill Abbott clarifies Candace Cameron Bure's stance at the network amidst controversy with the LGBTQ+ community

CEO Bill Abbott of Great American Family supports Candace Cameron Bure's star power but does not consider her a spokesperson for the network. In an interview with Variety, Abbott expressed his pride in having Cameron Bure on the team and highlighted their talented and dedicated team committed to producing high-quality faith and family content. Regarding Cameron Bure's personal views, Abbott compared it to the disclaimers seen at the end of movies or series, stating that they may not necessarily align with the company's views.

He clarified that Candace, although a prominent figure, does not represent Great American Media when she speaks. He referred to her excellent podcast but emphasized that her views on it do not reflect the company's stance.

In November 2022, Cameron Bure made controversial statements to WSJ. Magazine. She claimed that Great American Media, the parent company of Great American Family, would not incorporate LGBTQ+ storylines like its rival, Hallmark Media. Instead, she stated that the network would prioritize "traditional marriage" and faith-based content.

When asked about Cameron Bure's past comments, Abbott declined to take a position, stating that it was not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing. He acknowledged that Cameron Bure, as chief content officer, has her own perspective and expertise, and her judgment is highly valued in guiding the company's direction. Abbott expressed his commitment to supporting Cameron Bure in any way possible. However, he acknowledged that there are times when her personal beliefs differ from the company's stance. (Cameron Bure responded to the criticism through an Instagram post in November 2022, expressing her sadness that anyone would think she intended to offend or harm anyone and denying the accusation of being a "bigot.")

Abbott acknowledged that there is a need for clarification regarding Candace's role in the organization due to her dual position as the chief content officer for Great American Media. Nonetheless, he emphasized their support for her in the business aspect. Abbott admitted that the team should have discussed this matter with Cameron Bure but failed to do so. He further stated that when Candace expresses her views, she represents her own brand to a wide range of audiences and platforms.

Abbott remained discreet regarding the network's potential inclusion of same-sex storylines. Nevertheless, he asserted their commitment to embracing all individuals and promoting love and harmony worldwide. Abbott notably praised Cameron Bure, noting her suitability for the faith-based genre in collaboration with their streaming partner, PureFlix. He admired her executive prowess, considering her a formidable asset even in comparison to himself.

Abbott attributed the significant increase in Great American Family's viewership from 2022 to 2023 to Candace Cameron Bure's decision to leave Hallmark in April 2022 and join Great American Media. He emphasized that Bure's high profile, popularity, and social media impact were instrumental in this uptick. Abbott expressed admiration for Bure's unparalleled work ethic, stating that she works harder than anyone else. He also highlighted her exceptional performance behind the camera, suggesting that she has been even more impressive in that aspect than in front of it.
