Mojang stops updates for Minecraft spin-off game after three successful years, disappointing fans eagerly awaiting new content

Highlights

Minecraft Dungeons' support has ended, but players can still enjoy online multiplayer and the Ultimate Edition with all DLC chapters.

Mojang is looking forward to expanding the Minecraft universe through upcoming ventures, such as the recently launched Minecraft Legends. While Minecraft Dungeons received varied feedback, it garnered an impressive player base of 25 million individuals. This passion project was fueled by the developers' deep-rooted affection for dungeon crawlers.

Mojang has announced the end of support for Minecraft Dungeons, a year after its last significant update, the Luminous Night Event. This spin-off game, released in 2020, diverges from the main Minecraft game in terms of genre and offers a multiplayer-focused isometric dungeon crawler experience without the mining and crafting aspects. Despite receiving mixed reviews for its simplicity and procedural generation, Minecraft Dungeons has been supported by Mojang with six DLC campaigns and additional content updates.

Even though players who enjoyed this spin-off had a great time, Mojang has stated that "every journey has an end." In a status update on Minecraft Dungeons, the developers mentioned that there are no plans to update or continue the adventure beyond its current Version 1.17 update. Celebrating the game's fifth anniversary since it was announced, Mojang proudly announced that Dungeons has attracted 25 million unique players and expressed gratitude towards all those who picked it up. The company also took the opportunity to delve into the game's history, revealing that it started as a passion project fueled by the developers' love for dungeon crawlers.

Mojang has announced that they have no intentions of releasing new DLC chapters or updates for Minecraft. Instead, they are focusing on expanding the Minecraft universe through new projects. One of these projects is Minecraft Legends, a real-time strategy and action game that was recently released. Despite this, Mojang assures players that their journeys in Dungeons are not over, as there are multiple difficulties and randomized towers to explore. The developers express their gratitude towards the supportive players and assure them that they will continue to see them in the dungeons. Thankfully, the online multiplayer servers for Minecraft Dungeons will remain active, allowing players to continue enjoying the game. Additionally, the Minecraft Dungeons: Ultimate Edition is available for players who may have missed out, containing all six DLC chapters.

Minecraft Dungeons is available in arcades, as well as on PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
