Experiencing the finality of death can be a painful ordeal, but the unfortunate events that occurred during a Twitch streamer's Hardcore attempt at Diablo 4 were particularly heart-wrenching. The competition to achieve the highest level in Diablo 4's Hardcore mode has been ongoing since early access began, with some players facing the challenge of restarting due to bugs and technical glitches.
While Diablo 4's official launch is set for June 6, players who purchased more expensive editions of the game were able to begin their demon-slaying adventures a little earlier. Compared to many modern live service releases, Diablo 4 has had a relatively smooth launch on PC. However, console players had a different experience, with some PlayStation and Xbox owners encountering an error message stating that they lacked the necessary license to start the game. Fortunately, workarounds were discovered and the issue has since been resolved. In comparison to the launch of Diablo 3, the sequel has been a much more enjoyable experience.
SayfDJ's run in Diablo 4's Hardcore mode came to a devastating end during an Act 1 boss fight. Despite being in a promising position and having reduced the enemy's health to just a quarter, SayfDJ accidentally opened the in-game chat while trying to maneuver their character out of danger. Unbeknownst to them, their button presses were entering "2" and "q" into the chat instead of activating abilities, causing them to shout in frustration "I can't heal" before ultimately meeting their demise.
Some players who had their Hardcore attempts cut short due to character death were surprised to discover that the chat had been open the whole time. This led to criticism of the click-to-chat functionality in Diablo 4, which can cause issues when navigating the game using mouse clicks. SayfDJ's death was a reminder that even players who are not far into the game can face the same fate as those who have invested dozens of hours into it, regardless of their skill level. In an effort to reward achievement in Hardcore mode, the first 1000 players to reach level 100 will have their usernames immortalized on a statue of Lilith. However, the developers clarified that those with review copies of the game would not be eligible to ensure a level playing field.
Diablo 4 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
