The appearance of Ezra Bridger in episode 6 of Ahsoka implies that his character's storyline was carefully plotted, as hinted by creator Dave Filoni's earlier comment that Ezra was situated "far, far away."
The title of the episode, "Far, Far Away," highlights Filoni's cleverness by suggesting the inclusion of Ezra and Thrawn. Filoni's talent for foreshadowing and tantalizing fans with storyline hints demonstrates his ability to captivate the audience and keep them interested in the Star Wars universe.
Spoilers ahead for Ahsoka episode 6, "Far, Far Away." Star Wars has been known to improvise its storyline, but a recent discovery from Star Wars Celebration 2022 suggests that there might have been a plan all along.
In episode 6 of Ahsoka, fans finally witness the return of the beloved character Ezra Bridger, who mysteriously vanished during the finale of Star Wars Rebels in 2018. The finale of the previous series showcased Ezra's brilliant maneuver with the assistance of purrgil, a species of hyper-jumping whale-like creatures. Despite Grand Admiral Thrawn's advantage over the Rebel Alliance, Ezra cleverly used the purrgil to transport their ship through hyperspace, escaping into uncharted territories. This leads to the question: was there a hidden plan behind this daring move?
Based on a previous appearance by Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni, it appears that the knowledge of Ezra's whereabouts had been planned for some time. During a Q&A session with fans, Filoni casually mentioned that Ezra was "far, far away." Initially, this seemed like a playful reference to the iconic Star Wars phrase, but in hindsight, it held greater significance.
Notably, Ezra and Thrawn were indeed in a distant galaxy, which made the reference to being "far, far away" even more fitting. Furthermore, the episode in which these characters returned was aptly titled "Far, Far Away." In a clever Star Wars joke, Filoni essentially hinted that the characters would appear in that very episode. Though observant viewers may have already anticipated this based on the progression of events, it was still a lighthearted moment from the creator himself.
Ahsoka has been open about using callbacks and references in her storytelling. She even made the phrase "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away" canon within the Star Wars universe by including the ancient droid Huyang. This also created connections between Rosario Dawson's portrayal of Ahsoka Tano and The Lord of the Rings. Filoni's ability to predict fan reactions from a certain perspective is a clever way to engage with fans within this universe.
It wouldn't be surprising if fans now search through Filoni's recent interviews to discover more information. They may uncover details about Baylan and Shin's connection to the Jedi, or they might not find anything at all. Nonetheless, fan involvement with Star Wars will likely always remain intense and passionate, and moments like this are a testament to that.
Ahsoka releases new episodes on Tuesdays on Disney Plus.
