The creators of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse cleverly acknowledged the striking resemblance between their movie and this year's Best Picture winner, Everything Everywhere All At Once, through an Easter egg. Both films revolve around the concept of multiple versions of characters existing in various realities. However, the similarities don't end there, as both movies also incorporate a significant scene centered around a bagel. Recently, Erik Voss, the host of The Deep Dive, shared this intriguing Easter egg on Twitter.
Voss showcased a screenshot from the latest film, featuring a prominent billboard advertising a movie called All of It Always All Over the Place. Notably, the billboard prominently displays an image resembling a bagel.
Across the Spider-Verse and EEAAO's Bagel Similarities Explained
In the original 2018 Into the Spider-Verse, there is a humorous scene where an Alchemax worker is hit by a bagel during a chaotic action sequence. This scene is referenced in Across the Spider-Verse, where it is revealed that the person hit by the bagel was Dr. Jonathan Ohnn (played by Jason Schwartzman). Dr. Ohnn later becomes the villain known as The Spot after being caught in the collider explosion during the finale of the movie.
The bagel scene in Everything Everywhere All At Once holds unexpected significance and plays a crucial role in the movie's plot. Jobu Tupaki (played by Stephanie Hsu) creates an everything bagel that becomes an existential threat, as it contains literally everything and transforms into a toroid singularity.
In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, a billboard clearly indicates that the filmmakers were aware of this similarity from the beginning. Given the extensive planning involved in animated movies, it is impressive that they incorporated this clever reference. The Spider-Verse crew's amusement at the similarity mirrors that of the fans who delightedly discovered the hidden nod.
