Highlights

The movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse features a multitude of cutaway scenes and hidden references, presenting a diverse range of beloved Spider-Man variations, including Spider-Punk and the Spider-car.

The film's directors, Joaquim dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, shared their favorite cameos and Easter eggs, which included characters like Scarlet Spider, Web-Slinger, The Bombastic Bag Man, Spider-Woman Canada, and Metro Spider-Man. The movie effectively balances its wacky and absurd elements, such as the Spider-car and The Spot, with sincere storytelling, showcasing the Spider-Verse films' ability to provide both entertaining and emotional moments.

The movie that could give heart attacks to movie trivia buffs is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Filled with cameos and references, the film allowed the creators to have some fun. Each of them has their own favorite moments, considering the nature of the movie. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a movie that is packed with compressed cameos, so much so that some Spider-Man variants had to be cut. The main focus is on Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, but the animation is filled with countless cutaways and Easter eggs featuring various Spider-based hero variants. From nostalgic nods to fan favorites like Spider-Punk, to the inclusion of a literal Spider-car, there is something for every audience member to discover and question. And even the directors themselves are not exempt from being captivated by these moments.

Directors Joaquim dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson recently shared their favorite cameos and Easter eggs from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in a video on Collider's X account. The video reveals some expected cameos, such as the Scarlet Spider (voiced by Andy Samberg) and appearances by Yuri Lowenthal and Donald Glover. However, it also highlights more obscure and delightful moments, like the inclusion of Web-Slinger, an old West-style Spider-Man voiced by Taran Killam who rides a spider-powered horse. Visual effects supervisor Mike Lasker mentions The Bombastic Bag Man, a comedic hero who wears a bag on his head and makes a brief appearance.

Another unnoticed character in the Spider-Verse is Spider-Woman Canada, whose identity is easily understood. The hockey-loving icon from the north was shared by production designer Patrick O'Keefe. Additionally, the producers of Spider-Verse, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, introduced a unique character called Metro Spider-Man. Metro Boomin, the record producer who worked on the movie's soundtrack, inspired and voiced this character. In a memorable scene, Metro Spider-Man warns Miles that there is no escape before Miles jumps out of a window.

Furthermore, Thompson acknowledges the Spider-Buggy, the Spider-car mentioned earlier. Although the villain, The Spot, had some amusing moments (resulting in a fan creating a functioning Spot cosplay), it cannot compare to the absurdity of a car designed for a hero who can effortlessly travel faster without it. This is just one example of how the movie strikes a balance between being eccentric and maintaining genuinely serious and heartfelt storytelling. The Spider-Verse films have mastered this concept, and the creators had fun while crafting their remarkable works.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is available to buy digitally on Amazon Prime, with a physical version set to release September 5th.
