WARNING: This contains SPOILERS for Foundation season 2, episode 10
Summary
David S. Goyer, the creator of Foundation, sheds light on the impactful season 2 finale that shakes things up. This includes the demise of Salvor Hardin and the foundation laid for future episodes.
Goyer reveals that the initial plan was for Salvor to meet her fate in season 3. However, a deliberate alteration was made to emphasize the unpredictability of the future and to defy audience assumptions.
The intentional decision to introduce a major event just 10 minutes prior to the conclusion of Episode 10 was made to disrupt the expected flow of modern TV shows and inject exhilaration into the overall storyline. Creator of the Foundation series, David S. Goyer, provides a comprehensive breakdown of the highly impactful season 2 finale. Foundation, a science fiction series based on Isaac Asimov's acclaimed novels and available for streaming on Apple TV+, chronicles the perilous journey of a group of outcasts in their quest to save humanity and reconstruct civilization amidst the collapse of the Galactic Empire. The second season of this adaptation concluded with significant plot advancements, including a heart-wrenching loss and a captivating setup for future episodes.
Honestly, our original plan was for Salvor to meet her demise in Season 3 at the hands of The Mule. However, during the middle of the season, I had an idea and shared it with the other writers. Initially, they strongly disagreed with it. However, I persisted and wrote it out, suggesting that we take a vote. Surprisingly, everyone agreed that it actually worked.
I believe it works for two reasons. Firstly, it works on a character level because it shows Gaal that the future is not predetermined. This becomes especially important with the introduction of The Mule, who poses a significant existential threat not only to Gaal, but to humanity as well. It is also devastating that Gaal and the character at the beginning of the season are distant and slowly build a connection, only for her to tragically die. However, sometimes that's just the way life goes.
We were also intentional in the aftermath of "Game of Thrones" and how audiences have developed certain expectations when watching shows. There is a common anticipation that Episode 9 of big shows will have a lot of action, while Episode 10 acts as the concluding chapter. As a viewer, I am aware of this, but what you wouldn't expect is for a massive event to occur just 10 minutes before the end of Episode 10. It breaks away from the typical cadence that modern TV viewers have grown accustomed to, and I found that to be exciting. So once we made the decision to incorporate this unexpected twist, I examined the structure and determined that placing it where audiences least anticipate it would be the most impactful.
What Foundation's Future Looks Like
Viewers of the Apple TV+ sci-fi show are aware that Salvor's death is not the sole significant event in Foundation season 2. Another significant development is the revelation that Demerzel (Laura Birn) has been secretly ruling the Empire ever since Cleon the First released her from prison and programmed her to love him. This part of the story is presented through flashbacks, and Goyer mentions in the same interview that there are plans for additional flashbacks. Each flashback will delve further into the past as the series progresses, ultimately leading back to Earth.
Although Foundation season 3 has not been officially renewed, Goyer expresses confidence that it will happen. In an interview with ScreenRant discussing the future of Foundation, Goyer discusses The Mule and expresses optimism about the continuation of the story. Additionally, Goyer addresses the possibility of expanding the show's universe to include adaptations of other Asimov works such as I, Robot and the Galactic Empire saga. However, Goyer clarifies that the realization of these adaptations depends on how the current project is received by audiences.
Apple TV+ has showcased a predilection for science fiction as it continues to establish its main focus. Their narratives have encompassed various genres, including the stylish and modern Severance, the dystopian Silo, and the offbeat dramedy The Big Door Prize. According to Goyer's comments, it appears that Salvor's demise will not mark the conclusion of Foundation.
