Screen Rant: It's thrilling to witness the impressive expansion of Foundation in its second season, with an abundance of new characters and captivating corners of this vast world. Faced with these uncharted territories, striking the perfect equilibrium between world-building and the organic growth of established characters poses an intriguing challenge.

David S. Goyer: First of all, I was aware that in season 2, we had more room to explore different characters compared to season 1. We had already covered the important background information in the first three episodes of season 1. So, in a sense, we had almost three extra episodes to devote to character development.

With that in mind, we made a conscious decision to primarily focus on the familiar characters in the first episode before introducing new ones. Gradually, we introduced more characters in episode 2 and then a few more in episode 3. By the end of episode 3, we had introduced most of the characters. This approach was very intentional - we wanted to start with the characters the audience is already familiar with and then expand the storyline from there.

Do you have a character or location that particularly excited you to introduce to the audience this season? Ella-Rae Smith, who portrays Sareth, the queen of my heart in Cloud Dominion, is truly remarkable. She is not only a talented actor but also a delightful person to collaborate with. There were numerous actors and characters that I thoroughly enjoyed working with.

Depicting Helicon, Hari's birth world, in season 1 was a thrilling opportunity for me. It was a story that I had envisioned from the beginning, and I was grateful to be able to bring it to life in the first season. The experience was truly exciting for me.

One of the highlights of introducing new characters was the inclusion of Bel Riose, who was a personal favorite of mine. I was ecstatic that we were able to bring him into the series. Working with Ben Daniels, an actor whom I have admired for a long time, was a dream come true. Every day on set with him was like a pinch-me moment. He is an extraordinary actor and an exceptional individual. I can't wait for the audience to see his portrayal of Bel Riose.

How do you collaborate with actors to develop and differentiate characters like Hari or the Cleons, who have undergone changes or have multiple iterations?

David S. Goyer: For the Cleons, we approach them as brand new characters. We create detailed character biographies for the new Cleons, specifically for characters 16, 17, and 18 in this season. We analyze their unique characteristics and how they differ from the characters the actors portrayed previously. After a few episodes, we share these biographies with the actors and engage in discussions about the characters, encouraging them to contribute their own thoughts.

is that Lee, Terry, and Cassian bring their own individual contributions to the development of the characters they portray – Day, Dusk, and Dawn, respectively. This element adds to the enjoyment of the experience as they have the opportunity to portray distinct and unique characters each season. This aspect of the show creates an exciting and engaging dynamic for them.
