Fans have theorized that the inclusion of the Umgadi faction from Mortal Kombat 1 in the trailer hints at the possibility of a playable character named Kameo in the game. This trailer was initially revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, one of the most renowned conventions worldwide. The Umgadi trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, released at SDCC, focuses on the Umgadi faction - a group of warrior priestesses led by Tanya who protect the royal family. The trailer features various characters including Li Mei from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, as well as fan favorites like Mileena and Baraka, all of whom play a role in this new timeline. Fans have also noticed a potential return of Khameleon, who could potentially be a Kameo Assist Fighter, as a member of the Umgadi faction. In certain scenes of the Umgadi trailer, Khameleon is spotted in the background while Tanya and Li Mei are engaged in conversation. This background character possesses the same distinctive features as Khameleon, such as translucent hair and pupil-less eyes, and is seen wearing the Umgadi uniform, further solidifying the connection.
Speculation from one fan suggests that Khameleon, who is allied with Tanya and Mileena, may have the ability to change her uniform's colors depending on her affiliation in the story. This feature was present in earlier games, where Khameleon would adapt her colors according to her opponents. Despite being a relatively unknown ninja character in Mortal Kombat, fans are excited about the possibility of her appearance as either a cameo or a full-fledged fighter. She first appeared as a hidden character in the Nintendo 64 version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy before joining the roster in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Khameleon possesses the ability to turn invisible and can wield the weapons of the female ninjas from the original trilogy. Considering Ed Boon's hint about the return of more Ninja characters, Khameleon would be a perfect addition.
Mortal Kombat 1 launches September 19, 2023, for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
