Hackers have discovered evidence of a playable version of the classic Spider-Man villain, Doctor Octopus, in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Doctor Octopus is widely recognized as one of Spider-Man's most iconic adversaries. Despite Spider-Man's consistent presence in Marvel vs. Capcom games, Doctor Octopus has been notably absent. The third installment of the game franchise had originally intended to include the beloved antagonist, but the character was ultimately cut due to technical challenges, such as incorporating his robotic tentacles, as well as the significant data loss caused by the 2011 Tsunami. Recent findings by hackers have now confirmed the existence of an early build of the game that includes elements of Doc Ock.

Xeno posted these discoveries on Twitter, where modders successfully acquired an early Xbox 360 version of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and successfully extracted its contents. The findings not only revealed a significant amount of cut content but also confirmed various existing theories about the game. Notably, the extracted content included a character portrait and UI elements showcasing Doc Ock. From his portrait, it can be deduced that Doc Ock's appearance in MvC3 would have been based on his classic comic book look, featuring a bowl cut, yellow jumpsuit, and blue sunglasses.

Further supporting this, early elements of Frank West, another character who was considered for the game, were also discovered in this early build. However, Frank West eventually made it into the game's Ultimate re-release. Other noteworthy discoveries from this early build of the game included an unfinished stage, some incomplete music, and unused lines. The inclusion of Doctor Octopus as a potential playable character delighted many dedicated fans, as it served as concrete evidence verifying the longstanding rumors.

Currently, there are limited options to restore the character in its current state, apart from the already mentioned character portrait and user interface. However, there is an active modding community for the crossover fighter, allowing characters like the beloved Venom and Carnage to be added through fan efforts. Despite this, fans were initially pleased to discover the presence of Doc Ock's assets in the game, as subsequent releases had removed them from the files. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 can be played on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
