Miley Cyrus and Pharrell Williams have teamed up for a new collaboration, bringing back a nostalgic feel from 2013.

Released on Friday, March 1, the song titled “Doctor (Work It Out)” marks their first collaboration since the album Bangerz. The track, which was originally left off Miley's iconic album, features Cyrus singing over a catchy dance-pop beat, with lyrics like "Could be your doctor / And I could be your nurse." The song showcases Cyrus's vocals against a thumping bassline and vibrant production.

Cyrus's song is filled with hidden meanings, but she clarifies the message in her lyrics. On the bridge, she sings, "Are you on the fence? / I’ll slip but I won’t slide," emphasizing that it doesn't have to be a long-term commitment, just a night together.

Despite a decade passing since Bangerz, "Doctor (Work It Out)" has maintained its original production style. The song has a nostalgic feel, reminiscent of early 2010s hits like Daft Punk's "Get Lucky," Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," and Pharrell Williams' "Happy."

Cyrus and Williams gave fans a sneak peek of their new song at the Louis Vuitton Men’s Fall-Winter 2024 Collection event in Paris in January. Later, on February 28, Cyrus posted a teaser of the music video on her Instagram. The clip showed her dancing with her signature big hair and a fringed dress similar to the one she wore at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Miley and Williams discussed their collaboration with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in an interview that coincided with the release of “Doctor (Work It Out).” According to Miley, Williams played a crucial role in the creation of Bangerz, helping her move away from the Disney Channel starlet image she had from her time on Hannah Montana.

In the interview, Miley expressed that Williams was the only person she felt comfortable sharing her true desires with regarding her music and identity. She emphasized that he allowed her the freedom to express herself authentically, acting as a guiding force rather than imposing restrictions.

Williams recalled the time he first met her when she was known as Hannah Montana. Despite being pegged into a certain image, she was eager to explore life beyond expectations. Williams understood her struggles when others couldn't.

Cyrus expressed her gratitude for delaying the release of "Doctor (Work It Out)" as it truly represented her current spirit and essence. The song marked a return to her dance-pop roots on the 2023 album "Endless Summer Vacation", which earned her two Grammy awards in 2024 for Best Pop Vocal Performance and Record of the Year for the hit song "Flowers".
