Matty Healy attempted to offer an explanation for his controversial behavior as his band kicked off the latest leg of their tour.
The 1975 delivered a performance at the Hollywood Bowl in California on Monday, October 2, during which the band's frontman, Healy, 34, took a moment to acknowledge and learn from his past actions while on stage.
In uploaded footage via X, Healy stated, "I apologize to those people who have been hurt by my actions, and I am committed to making improvements in the future. It's crucial for me to also clarify my intentions, ensuring that no ill will is intended. As an artist, my aim is to establish an environment for myself to perform in where not everything I do is interpreted literally."
Healy stated that his persona does not accurately reflect his everyday life and is merely a facade.
"I have portrayed exaggerated versions of myself on various platforms, such as print, podcasts, and in a somewhat misguided attempt to fulfill the archetype of a 21st-century rock star," he explained. "Therefore, it is a complex situation."
He wrapped up by mocking his dubious actions, stating, "Sometimes engaging in make-believe is the only route to discovering your true self, and one could argue that men prefer making offensive imitations for attention rather than seeking therapy."
In a previous incident this year, Healy faced criticism for referring to Ice Spice as an "Inuit Spice Girl" and a "plump Chinese woman" during a February episode of "The Adam Friedland Show" podcast. He subsequently released a public apology later that month.
I feel slightly remorseful and I apologize if my actions have caused any offense. Ice Spice, I am sincerely sorry. My intention was not to cause any annoyance or misunderstanding with my joking. I simply don't want Ice Spice to have a negative impression of me. I genuinely care for you, Ice Spice, and I deeply regret my actions.
"When I came across that podcast, I felt utterly perplexed. The reason being, I heard something along the lines of 'chubby Chinese lady' or something like that, and I was like, 'What does that even imply?'" she conveyed to Billboard during an interview released on September 28. "I must point out that I have a curvy figure. So, the term 'Chinese' doesn't really make sense to me. I was rather flabbergasted. However, they did apologize eventually. Honestly, throughout this whole incident, I didn't really mind."
Furthermore, she included, "He apologized to me multiple times. We have reconciled."
Healy stunned fans with the announcement of his band's hiatus before delivering his apology on Monday.
"Whenever we have the opportunity, we truly enjoy performing for all of you here in this venue," he expressed to the audience during a Sacramento, California show on September 26. "After this tour, we will be taking an indefinite break from live performances. Therefore, it is truly fantastic to have all of you joining us tonight."
