Ice Spice fans were outraged by racially insensitive comments made by Matty Healy earlier this year. However, Ice Spice herself has moved on from the controversy. In an interview with Billboard on September 28, the 23-year-old rapper expressed her confusion upon hearing the derogatory remarks, but ultimately did not let them affect her.

Ice stated that she had encountered Healy, aged 34, at a Fashion Week event earlier this month, and they have now reconciled. "He approached me and asked if I was okay, and I reassured him that I was," she recounted. "He apologized to me multiple times. We have resolved our issues."

Healy faced criticism in February when he made derogatory remarks about Ice during an appearance on "The Adam Friedland Show." He joined in as the podcast hosts imitated Chinese and Hawaiian accents, referring to Ice as an "Inuit Spice Girl" or a "chubby Chinese lady." Following backlash from listeners who deemed the comments racist, the episode was subsequently removed from Apple and Spotify.

In the same month, Healy publicly apologized to Ice on Instagram, expressing remorse for any offense caused. He clarified that his intention was not to create misunderstandings with his jokes, but rather to prevent Ice from viewing him negatively. He conveyed his love for Ice and conveyed his sincere apologies.

Months later, Healy spoke to The New Yorker, dismissing the significance of the backlash. He believed that no one truly cared about his words, emphasizing that no one would be distressed by it to the point of discussing it with their partner at night.

When The New Yorker writer argued that "maybe it matters," Healy stood firm. "If it does, you're either deceived or, sorry, a liar," he stated. "You're either not telling the truth about being hurt, or you're a bit unstable for feeling hurt. It's simply people saying, 'Oh, there's something bad over there, let me get as close to it as possible so you can see how admirable I am.' And in a way, I want them to do that because they're revealing something so fundamental."

The controversy escalated partly because Healy was dating Taylor Swift at the time, who released her "Karma" remix with Ice in May. However, in early June, it was confirmed that Swift, 33, and Healy had ended their relationship.

One month later, Healy confessed to having some remorse over his past remarks. Speaking at his concert with The 1975 in London, he acknowledged, "I have always been experimental in my approach, and while I have had successes, there are undoubtedly moments I would redact, including certain jokes and possibly a few songs."

Healy made an announcement on September 26, stating that The 1975 will be taking a break from performing indefinitely once their ongoing tour concludes in Europe in March 2024. Speaking at the band's concert in Sacramento, California, Healy expressed their appreciation for the audience's continuous support and the joy of having them present for the show. "We always cherish the opportunity to perform for you all in this venue, and it's truly amazing to have each and every one of you here tonight."
