Arlan, the only character in Honkai: Star Rail who uses HP instead of SP when casting a Skill, has a unique playstyle in comparison to other characters. Despite this, he is still a formidable single-target Lightning DPS with strong AOE capabilities. With proper health management, Arlan's potential can be fully realized, making him an even more valuable addition to your lineup. Stay tuned for the release of the Best Light Cone!
The health-drain aspect of Arlan's abilities make him more reliant on his team and build compared to other characters. However, once players figure out how to overcome this mechanic, Arlan can become a formidable DPS carry that rivals some of the best damage dealers in Honkai: Star Rail. If you're looking to form a team around Arlan, here are two recommended compositions to consider.
Honkai: Star Rail Best Arlan Teams
In order to maximize Arlan's damage output, players must keep him at or near his 30% Max HP sweet spot while in the field. Although he has his own methods of recovering health, they rely on defeating enemies, making it wise to have a teammate providing protection or sustain to prevent him from being knocked out by stray AOE attacks. For players seeking a lightning hypercarry comp, Arlan is a valuable addition to the team.
This variation of the hypercarry team comp focuses on Lightning damage and features Arlan as the primary DPS unit. It excels in short encounters where the main threat is weak to Lightning DMG, such as in Stagnant Shadow domains, Simulated Universe Elites, and Forgotten Hall floors.
The team composition includes Arlan as DPS, Tingyun as the main support character, and Bronya/Asta as support/tank/healer. Tingyun's ability to boost Arlan's ATK and Lightning DMG, as well as helping him charge up his Ultimate, make her an essential part of the team. Arlan's Ultimate only costs 110 Energy, making it relatively easy to use.
Bronya can enhance Arlan's attack power and speed, with the latter being particularly crucial since it enables him to sacrifice his health more often to reach the desirable 30% HP threshold. Asta serves as a decent free-to-play substitute for Bronya; however, her speed boost won't be as effective as Combat Redeployment's instant turn advancement.
For the final slot, players can opt for either Gepard or Natasha to keep their team alive. Gepard's area-of-effect shield can shield everyone from harm, while Natasha can provide Arlan with a continuous source of healing that persists between turns. Players who possess an E6 March 7th may choose to use her instead—March's healing is weak enough to help Arlan maintain his sweet spot without jeopardizing his life.
One of the major advantages of utilizing Arlan as a Sub-DPS is that he doesn't rely on SP to inflict damage. This means that players can utilize their abilities more frequently while maintaining their DPS. Even though Arlan may not always generate SP on his own, his mere presence on the team can keep the SP economy positive.
DPS: Seele/Jing Yuan
Sub-DPS: Arlan
Support: Tingyun/Bronya
Any Tank/Healer
This team configuration allows for any combination of units, but Seele and Jing Yuan are excellent choices for carries who can benefit from having Arlan on their side. These characters are SP-hungry, particularly when paired with a Support unit that can buff their damage. In this scenario, Arlan's responsibilities include generating Skill Points, breaking Lightning Weaknesses, and blasting groups of weak enemies while the other damage dealers tackle bigger targets.
To achieve the greatest success with this team, players should utilize it in the Simulated Universe with blessings from the Path of the Hunt. Arlan's AOE ultimate can set up Seele for lengthy damage chains, and he can consistently eliminate minions summoned by Elites and Bosses. Arlan's strength is amplified in World 4, as the ultimate battle against Svarog involves an abundance of robotic enemies.
Honkai: Star Rail is currently available on PC and mobile devices, with a PlayStation version in the works.
