Lucasfilm has recently announced the upcoming release of a new Star Wars film titled The Mandalorian & Grogu, with Ahsoka showrunner Dave Filoni at the helm. This signals the studio's return to prioritizing their big-screen Star Wars projects after a period of reduced activity following the 2019 release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Upcoming Star Wars projects set in a distant galaxy are being developed, including movies led by James Mangold of Logan and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy of Ms. Marvel. Mangold's film will delve into the beginnings of the Jedi Order, while Obaid-Chinoy's will focus on Daisy Ridley's Rey after the events of Rise of Skywalker.
In April 2023, Filoni was announced as the director of an unnamed Star Wars movie alongside Mangold and Obaid-Chinoy. It is unclear at this time whether this movie is the same as The Mandalorian & Grogu.
The Mandalorian & Grogu movie announced for cinemas
The story started in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian will continue with both The Mandalorian and Grogu. Filoni, who is also one of the show’s executive producers, played a key role alongside creator Jon Favreau in developing the series.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will soon be making their big screen debut. The highly-anticipated film will be directed by Jon Favreau and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni, with production set to begin later this year. This is the Way.
Lucasfilm announced on StarWars.com that production for The Mandalorian & Grogu will begin at some point in 2024. The project's plot and characters were not revealed, but it was confirmed that Din Djarin/The Mandalorian and his adopted son, Grogu, will be involved.
It is uncertain whether Pedro Pascal, who stars in The Mandalorian, will reprise his role as Din Djarin in The Mandalorian & Grogu. Despite his largely voice-only performance, the Chilean-American actor was not mentioned in Lucasfilm's announcement.
Lucasfilm confirms Ahsoka Season 2 is on the way
The release date for the Mandalorian & Grogu's big-screen debut remains unknown. The only certainty is that the production will “lead Lucasfilm’s ongoing feature-development slate,” indicating a release prior to Mangold or Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars films.
Lucasfilm's announcement also confirmed that Dave Filoni is currently working on Ahsoka Season 2, marking the studio's first official indication that more episodes are on the way. Ahsoka Season 1 ended with several unresolved storylines, leading to speculation about a second season. Filoni acknowledged this in a November 2023 interview, revealing that the creative team was in a "wait-and-see pattern" after the death of key cast member Ray Stevenson.

As a Gen Z netizen, I am thrilled about the upcoming Mandalorian & Grogu movie. The Mandalorian series has been a huge success, and I can't wait to see what adventures Din Djarin and Grogu get up to on the big screen. I'm also excited about the confirmation of Ahsoka Season 2. Ahsoka is one of my favorite Star Wars characters, and I can't wait to see what she does next.
I think it's great that Lucasfilm is expanding the Star Wars universe with new movies and TV shows. There are so many great stories to tell in this galaxy, and I'm excited to see what comes next. I'm also glad that Lucasfilm is bringing back some of the beloved characters from the original trilogy. It's great to see that these characters are still relevant and popular with audiences today.
