The recent release of Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse has been met with critical acclaim, thanks to its imaginative portrayal of a multiverse filled with vibrant characters and numerous Easter eggs. Among the standout performances was Donald Glover's surprise appearance as Prowler, but it remains uncertain if he will continue to reprise the role in the future.
Glover's relationship with Spider-Man dates back to 2012, when fans rallied online to have him cast as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man. Ultimately, the role went to Andrew Garfield, and Glover was content with the decision. However, he remained involved in the Spider-Man franchise by voicing Miles Morales in the 2014 DisneyXD series Ultimate Spider-Man and portraying Uncle Aaron in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When asked about Donald Glover's return as Aaron Davis/Prowler in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, producer Phillip Lord revealed that it may have been a one-time appearance. Lord explained that it was a personal request to Glover to surprise his kids, who were fans of the first Spider-Verse film. The filmmakers decided not to animate Glover's character in the sequel to keep each of the Spider-Man universes and canon authentic. "It will be so easy. And you commit to nothing," Lord said of reaching out to Glover for the role.
The appearance of Donald Glover as Prowler in the second part of Miles Morales' story left fans speculating about his potential return in the MCU. However, it seems that his involvement in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was just a treat for fans and a nod to other Spidey movies, as there was no explanation about Prowler's whereabouts or intentions. Despite this, Glover's cameo has opened up possibilities for future projects, including a Miles Morales live-action movie which has been confirmed by Sony producer Amy Pascal. This could potentially lead to a more expanded Spider-Verse and connections to other versions of the franchise.
