Madonna honored her late mom and talked about the challenges of motherhood in a heartfelt Mother’s Day tribute.
On Sunday, May 12, the 65-year-old singer posted a photo on Instagram from the Celebration Tour. In the picture, Madonna is standing beneath a large, sepia-toned photo of her mother, Madonna Louise Ciccone, who passed away in 1963.
Madonna was not even six years old when her mother, Madonna Louise, who was 30 at the time, passed away from breast cancer. Reflecting on the last time she saw her mother, Madonna shared a touching moment from her childhood.
During a concert, Madonna looked up at her mother's beautiful face from the stage, wondering what her mother must have been feeling as she waved goodbye from her hospital window. Little did she know that it would be the final time she would see her. She recalled getting into the station wagon, closing the door, and driving away, unaware that her mother was nearing the end of her life.
No one had informed Madonna that her mother was dying. She could only watch as her mother deteriorated inexplicably until one day she was gone, leaving behind a void that could not be explained except that she had passed away peacefully in her sleep.
During her year-long Celebration Tour, Madonna revealed that she sought her mother's blessing every night. She also mentioned that the tour brought her closer to her own children. Four out of six of Madonna's children, including 18-year-old son David, 18-year-old daughter Mercy, and 11-year-old twin daughters Stella and Estere, worked on the tour every night. Madonna also has a 27-year-old daughter named Lourdes with ex Chris Leone and a 23-year-old son named Rocco with ex Guy Ritchie.
Madonna shared, "I bonded with my children during this tour. We supported each other through the long hours and challenges. They played a crucial role in helping me achieve my dreams."
Motherhood is a topic that Madonna also touched upon. She mentioned that even pop stars are figuring things out as they go when it comes to raising children.
According to Madonna, there is no handbook or university course that prepares you for motherhood. It's all about trial and error, learning from mistakes, and ultimately finding success. She also reflected on the realization that children end up teaching parents just as much as parents teach children.
Madonna recently took to Instagram to commend her children for their impressive talent and hard work during the tour. She expressed how they each brought their own unique skills to the stage, which helped her immensely throughout the journey.
She also shared that rehearsals for the tour started over a year ago, with a break of almost 2 months to allow her to recover from a serious health scare in June 2023. During that time, Madonna had developed a bacterial infection and had to be placed in a medically induced coma.
In April, she wrote about how her children never stopped practicing and cheering her on and supporting her. Their enthusiasm kept her going, even though they were also attending school and rehearsing every night. She expressed how proud she was of all of them.
