Luke Bryan Clears the Air on Red Eyes and Swollen Hands - No Smoking Involved

In a recent interview, Luke Bryan sets the record straight on the cause of his red eyes and swollen hands, dispelling rumors of smoking and addressing allergy concerns.

Luke Bryan wants to clarify that his red eyes are not from smoking marijuana, but from catching fish. The 47-year-old country singer discussed his bass allergy in an interview with Audacy on April 16. He jokingly mentioned, "Just so we know, if I do interviews and I look like I’ve been smoking pot, that’s not true. I’ve been catching bass."

Bryan shared, "If I touch a bass, my eyes will get red and my hands will swell when I have to remove the hook. It's a struggle, but I love fishing so much that I'll do whatever it takes. That's why I always make sure to take an Allegra in the morning before heading out."

Despite fishing since he was a child, Bryan admitted that he "spent years not knowing" about his allergy.

Bryan remembered his dad taking him on fishing trips where he would be in the back of the boat, feeling like he needed an EpiPen due to wheezing. They thought it was just allergies to the trees, but it turned out to be a reaction to touching the bass.

Realizing he was not the only one facing this struggle, Bryan joked about starting a new foundation to help those who have been affected by touching fish.

Bryan joked, "Maybe I can raise awareness. Sunfish, brim, shell cracker - they all wipe me out pretty good."

Bryan frequently shares his passion for fishing and even his fishing-related injuries on social media. In March 2021, he surprised his followers by sharing how he accidentally hooked his own hand while fishing.

Bryan grimaced as he looked at the fishing hook sticking out of his thumb in an Instagram video. He joked about how it was definitely going to leave a mark and even mentioned his concern about it being stuck in his bone.

Despite the mishap, Bryan and his friend decided it was best to seek medical attention for his injury. He shared that he had invited his guitar tech, Russ, on the fishing trip and ended up ruining it. However, he reassured everyone that they would be back on the water in about 25 minutes.

That same day, the American Idol judge posted a clip of him laughing in a medical room before he was back out on the water again. “Got the hook out. We’re back,” Bryan wrote at the time.
