Emmy Russell, a contestant on American Idol, stirred up emotions with her Top 20 performance. Host Ryan Seacrest was brought to tears after Russell sang her original song titled “Want You” on the episode that aired on Sunday, April 14.

Before taking the stage, Russell shared that her song was inspired by unrequited love. She sang, "I want you to want me / Like I want you / I want you to need me / Like I need you."

After witnessing the emotional performance, 49-year-old host Ryan couldn't hold back his tears. Judge Katy Perry then asked him, "Ryan, do you wish someone wanted you as much as she does?" To which he responded, "Love me, love me like I love you."

Luke Bryan showed a sweet gesture by getting up from the judges' desk to comfort Seacrest. He kindly offered, "Ryan, I'll give you a hug," and Seacrest playfully jumped into his arms.

Afterwards, Seacrest explained to Russell, the granddaughter of country legend Loretta Lynn, why he reacted the way he did. He shared, "Knowing that was your song, you started writing at 9, and those are your lyrics, it was just so emotional backstage."

During Russell's performance, Bryan, 47, playfully remarked that Seacrest was the "most expensive thing I've ever held." He also expressed admiration for the song choice and commended Russell by saying, "That was so you. I loved it because it felt genuine, and the emotion really came through, which is what defines your artistry. Keep that authenticity."

Bryan added, "The way you interpreted that song is truly your own. It was heartfelt and possibly my favorite performance from you so far."

Perry, 39, offered Russell some constructive criticism while fellow judge Lionel Richie shared a similar sentiment. "Miss Emmy, that was one of my favorite original songs that you’ve sang. I know you were just a little nervous. I just want more breath, more long notes," the pop star stated. "Girl, like, go swimming. Learn how to hold your breath more. Like, we need longer notes from Emmy, and I know you have them. We need power, c’mon, let’s go. The time is now."

Russell’s original song was enough to save her from the night’s eliminations as contestants Elleigh Marie, KBlocks, Blake Proehl and Hailey Mia were sent home.

Fans first got to know Russell when her audition for season 22 aired in February. During her audition, she performed an original song called “Skinny” and shared with the judges her desire to "own her voice" and challenge herself, despite being related to Lynn. (Lynn passed away at the age of 90 in October 2022.)

Do you know who the Queen of Country is?

Perry praised Russell as an excellent songwriter and advised her not to compare herself to her grandmother. Richie saw potential in the aspiring musician, while Bryan emphasized their role in building her confidence. With three yeses from the judges, she secured a ticket to Hollywood.
