Liverpool Transfers: Urgent Need for Midfield and Defensive Reinforcements - Critical for Revitalizing Team Success

Liverpool needs to strengthen their squad with a midfielder and a defender, according to Jamie Carragher Missing out on signing Moises Caicedo and their defensive vulnerabilities are evident as highlighted by Gary Neville Urgent reinforcements required before the summer window shuts on Sept 1

Liverpool must sign a holding midfield player and a centre-back before the transfer window closes in order for Jurgen Klopp's reconstruction at Anfield to be deemed successful, according to Jamie Carragher. The new Premier League season kicked off for Liverpool with a commendable 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. However, the performance also exposed the team's current defensive vulnerabilities.

In recent days, the two clubs have been competing to secure the signature of Moises Caicedo, a defensive midfielder from Brighton & Hove Albion. Chelsea has now agreed to a British-record transfer fee for the Ecuador international, while Southampton holds midfielder Romeo Lavia.

Consequently, Jurgen Klopp had to make use of summer signing Alexis Mac Allister in an unfamiliar No 6 position at Stamford Bridge. Additionally, forward Cody Gakpo had to drop back and play in midfield as the visitors chose to start the game with four attackers on the field.

Liverpool started the game strongly, controlling the first 30 minutes in west London. They even took the lead with a goal from Luis Garcia. However, their defensive issues became evident, especially due to a lack of support for the defenders, which Chelsea quickly exploited. Jamie Carragher pointed out that in the past, Liverpool had a strong defensive presence even from their forwards, with players like Roberto Firmino.

The combination of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Henderson, Fabinho, and Wijnaldum creates a formidable pressing force. However, this aggressive style has led to an increase in goals conceded and mistakes made. Despite their success, there is room for improvement in Liverpool's defensive capabilities. The team's vulnerability in allowing opponents to easily transition from one end of the pitch to the other remains a significant concern.

It just feels too easy to get from one end of the pitch to the other against Liverpool. That's a big problem.

Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool's rebuild may encounter a few more obstacles, as his former team currently resembles the high-scoring, yet defensively vulnerable side from the early years of Jurgen Klopp's tenure as manager.

"We pundit almost sense that Liverpool is building a second version of Klopp," suggesting that the team may have to endure a similar period of hardship as they did when Klopp initially took charge. Matches are expected to be high-scoring and thrilling, with results like 2-2 and 3-3. While this will be exciting for viewers, it may not be ideal for fans. Carragher believes that in addition to a holding midfielder, Liverpool should prioritize signing a central defender to bring more stability to the backline, particularly due to the absence of a solid defensive shield."

The type of defender you bring in matters," he explained. "Do you opt for a young player who can control the ball and start the attacks from the back? Perhaps someone who is left-footed to bring a sense of balance to Liverpool?

"However, when I assess all the defenders currently, it is Andy Robertson who truly stands out. He has been sensational, relentlessly chasing after opponents, but it has been five or six long years of tirelessly running up and down that line. It certainly has its consequences."

Trent's defensive ability makes it unlikely for him to be a part of the team. Van Dijk may not be on the same level, and it is something we have come to accept. Consequently, I believe they will face more questions without the necessary protection. They require someone to bring stability to the team and succeed in one-on-one battles, rather than prioritizing attacking.

Defensively, Liverpool is a major concern for me. This is evident in the recent action where they had a corner and nearly allowed a goal at the opposing end.

Neville: It's still a surprise when I watch Liverpool how many chances they concede

We have Gary Neville's thoughts on the matter during his appearance on the Gary Neville podcast:

"Liverpool is in dire need of a skilled holding midfielder. They require a genuine defender, a player who is dedicated to defending and can effectively cover the entire back four."

Both teams possess a certain level of chaos, lacking organization to some extent. However, considering it is still early in the season and neither team has completed their transfers yet, it is understandable. Mauricio Pochettino is still adjusting to his role as a new manager, while Jurgen Klopp is trying to establish stability within his new team.

What baffles me about Liverpool is that despite having the most consistent defensive lineup in the Premier League, they still don't appear to be a world-class unit. Individually, their players are exceptional, but it remains surprising to witness how many scoring opportunities they allow their opponents. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable game with room for improvement for both teams.
