Manchester City have secured Kyle Walker's services until 2026, as the 33-year-old defender penned a fresh contract. Despite facing a period of disfavor, including exclusion from the starting XI in the Champions League final, Walker was previously rumored to be heading to Bayern Munich this season.
Walker, who has won 15 trophies with the club, expressed his excitement in signing a new deal, firmly asserting that his future remains with Manchester City. He stated, "I'm delighted to commit to a new contract. Staying with Manchester City is the optimal decision for me."
"I've enjoyed every single moment of the past six years at this fantastic club.
"The treble-winning season is one I will never forget and we're ready to go again and try to win more trophies.
"We must insist on this. We have established a high standard, and every year the question is how can we improve? How can we push ourselves further? It seems like we are constantly achieving that each year.
"We have likely reached the peak of success where the only direction left is downwards, as it is uncertain whether we can achieve another triple victory. However, it's not impossible. Who knows? We might just be able to do it."
We may not be favored to do so, but it is crucial for us to ensure our presence and competitiveness in the later stages of all competitions, as we strive to contend for the coveted trophies.
However, what sets us apart is our exceptional ability to focus on one game at a time rather than getting caught up in future plans. Our primary focus is on the present, which kicks off this Saturday against West Ham.
"I am thrilled to remain at a club that consistently vies for prestigious titles each year, and I am eagerly anticipating the exciting prospects that lie ahead in the forthcoming years."
The director of football, Txiki Begiristain, lauded the player as the epitome of the finest right-back globally.
"He possesses exceptional football skills, including remarkable speed, strength, and valuable experience, which greatly contribute to his vital role as a key member of our team," he remarked.
"In my perspective, he surpasses all other right-backs globally, displaying an unparalleled combination of attributes. His presence adds a distinct, valuable quality to our team dynamics."
Kyle has played a pivotal role in our recent achievements, and we have full belief that his contribution will enable us to contend for championships in the upcoming seasons. In June, Sky in Germany stated that Bayern Munich was engaged in advanced talks to acquire the defender. However, Walker expressed his desire to remain at the Etihad and commit to extending his current contract.
Guardiola criticized Walker's ability to play in City's system in April, specifically referring to the time when John Stones replaced him in midfield and he had lost his place in the team.
"He is unable to do it," Guardiola expressed about Walker. "He will always possess speed; even at 60 years old, Kyle will be the fastest player in this room. However, to play in a central position, you require refined movements, and unfortunately, he lacks some of those essential traits."
Walker, who joined City from Tottenham in 2017 for £50m, has won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and the Champions League in his six years at the club.
