Kevin Costner's Involvement in Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2

Is Kevin Costner set to reprise his role as John Dutton for the anticipated final chapter of Yellowstone? The popular neo-Western series, created by Taylor Sheridan, has been through a whirlwind of events since the release of the first half of its fifth season in November.

The show has faced ongoing rumors and speculation, particularly revolving around Kevin Costner, the star of Yellowstone, as he has been occupied with his ambitious four-movie Western series, Horizon.

In May 2023, one rumor was finally confirmed: Yellowstone will indeed conclude with Season 5. Nevertheless, the franchise will continue to thrive with its spinoffs, and there is still anticipation for Part 2. The question remains: will Costner return to portray the Montana rancher?

Will Kevin Costner return in Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2?

It’s currently unclear whether Kevin Costner will be returning as John Dutton III in Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2.

There has been much talk about the rumors claiming Costner and Sheridan aren’t seeing eye-to-eye with regard to filming schedules. 

Costner's lawyer, Marty Singer, refuted the rumors of the actor's alleged difficulty to work with. He dismissed the claims stating, "It is completely false that Kevin was only available for a week during the filming of the latter half of Season 5 of Yellowstone."

Nevertheless, this is a hectic period for the renowned actor, as he recently commenced filming the second installment of his pet project, the Western movie series titled Horizon: An American Saga.

Sources close to the production of Yellowstone have revealed to Deadline that Kevin Costner's return for the final episodes remains uncertain, as the start of production for these episodes in August is approaching. However, what we can confirm is that the final six episodes are indeed moving forward, albeit with a delay from the originally planned summer release, and are now scheduled to premiere on Paramount in November 2023.

What happens after Yellowstone Season 5?

With the conclusion of Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2, there will not be a Season 6. However, fans can look forward to a spinoff series that has yet to be titled.

Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, expressed his excitement about the new show, stating, "Yellowstone has been the foundation upon which we have built a successful universe of global hits – from 1883 to Tulsa King. I am confident that our sequel will also be a tremendous success, thanks to the brilliant creative vision of Taylor Sheridan and our talented cast members who bring these shows to life."

CEO of 101 Studios, David Glasser, exclaimed that the Dutton story persists, commencing right where Yellowstone concludes, in a new monumental saga. The exhilaration to present this fresh expedition to global viewers is boundless. The anticipation mounts as Matthew McConaughey is rumored to undertake the lead character in the upcoming series, although this remains unverified.

Yellowstone's other spinoffs, such as 1883, 1923, and 6666, as well as the new Bass Reeves series, will also be ongoing.
