Sheridan revealed that he and Costner have resolved any alleged disagreement, stating that Costner expressed his desire to focus on directing his upcoming western film, Horizon. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sheridan shared that he accommodated Costner's preferred exit date from Yellowstone, allowing him to pursue his passion project.
Paramount Network made an official announcement in May that Yellowstone will conclude with its fifth season. The first half of the season wrapped up in January, and the second batch of episodes was initially scheduled to premiere this summer. However, the network has now revealed that the airing of these episodes will be delayed until November. This news follows months of speculation regarding a potential rift between the show's creator, Taylor Sheridan, and its lead actor, Kevin Costner, who allegedly expressed a desire to leave the series.
Sheridan expressed that his perception of Kevin as an actor remains unchanged despite the rumored drama. He praised Kevin's portrayal of John Dutton as both symbolic and impactful. Furthermore, Sheridan emphasized that any conflicts between him and Kevin could always be resolved through communication over the phone.
Sheridan dismissed claims that he had instructed Costner to focus solely on his acting, a rumor that had allegedly contributed to Costner's decision to leave Yellowstone. "I never had that conversation with Kevin," Sheridan clarified. He acknowledged that during Season 2, Costner had expressed dissatisfaction with the direction of his character. "Kevin felt Season 2 was straying from his vision," Sheridan admitted, noting that there may have been some validity to Costner's concerns. However, in Season 3, the show realigned with Costner's vision, and Sheridan pointed out that Costner had even won a Golden Globe for his performance.
Addressing rumors of scheduling conflicts between himself and Costner, Sheridan suggested that these reports were exaggerated due to third-party comments.
Sheridan expressed his concerns about the involvement of lawyers in the situation, stating that it often hampers communication between people and leads to the spreading of false information and the shifting of blame based on public perception. He acknowledged Kevin's resilience in handling the situation and questioned whether anyone deserves to go through such scrutiny. While Kevin prioritizes his movie and intends to redirect the attention towards it, Sheridan expressed his hope that the movie is worth the effort and turns out to be a good one.
Although the filming for the first installment of Costner's Horizon saga began in August 2022, he has been working on bringing this film to life since 1988. Costner aims to create a total of four Horizon movies, with the first one scheduled to premiere in the upcoming fall. In May, he confirmed that the second movie was already in progress.
According to THR, there are ongoing discussions to persuade Costner to film a few scenes that will conclude his storyline as John Dutton, although the scripts are still unfinished. Sheridan mentioned that he is currently not writing in support of the ongoing writers strike, expressing his disappointment regarding Costner's departure. Sheridan further stated that while it doesn't change the character's closure, it does shorten it.
Sheridan implied that even if Costner had chosen to stay for the entirety of Yellowstone, John Dutton's character would not have survived until the end. However, he assured that John's ultimate fate will not be influenced by his off-screen relationship with Costner. Sheridan stated, "I don't create dramatic endings just to spite someone. Whether it boosts Costner's ego or offends him, that is not something I consider when telling the story."
Regarding the production delays for season 5, Sheridan absolved himself of any responsibility for the conflicts that caused the postponement of new episodes. He clarified, "I have no control over the schedule. I do not decide when production begins or when episodes air. Those decisions are made by individuals higher up. My area of influence is solely the content - that's it. None of my productions have ever been delayed because of me."
