At 69 years old, Costner wowed the audience at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, May 19, with a 10-minute standing ovation for his role in the new film Horizon: An American Saga.
The film, which was co-written, directed and starred in by the Yellowstone actor, will be released on June 28. It is a four-part project that delves into the settlement of the American West.
Costner was seen "dabbing away a tear" after the film premiered at a French festival, as reported by People magazine.
The acting veteran expressed gratitude for the audience's patience in helping him realize the need to speak. It was a special moment not just for him, but also for his fellow actors, supporters, and everyone who believed in him. He found joy in the unpredictable nature of show business and felt fortunate to have discovered his passion.
Costner, known for his role in Yellowstone, reflected on his departure from the show and acknowledged that the work he created now belonged to the audience. He emphasized the importance of sharing stories beyond their initial release, highlighting the value of longevity over immediate success. He considered the unexpected turn of events to be another blessing in his life and thanked the audience for their time and support.
The father-of-seven, who is rumored to be dating Jewel, was seen on the film’s red carpet earlier that day alongside five of his children. Each of them feature in Horizon: An American Saga alongside their father.
Costner expressed his gratitude during the speech, saying, "I’ll never forget this. Neither will my children. They all look so beautiful, dressed up so nice, the women, the men. They’re so handsome."
The actor gained popularity on TV for his role in the show Yellowstone, which first aired in 2018. He played the character of John Dutton III, the widowed patriarch of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, and received a Golden Globe award in 2023.
The first part of the last season of Yellowstone ended in January 2023, leaving the fate of the show uncertain.
Paramount announced in May 2023 that season 5 of the western drama would come to an end. Despite plans to air the second part of the season in summer 2023, production delays and rumors of tension between Costner and creator Taylor Sheridan caused a delay.
Costner addressed the rumors in an interview with Deadline, which was published on Monday, May 13.
I have been criticized by those guys and I know where it's all coming from. I chose not to engage in that negativity," he mentioned. "But if you know me well, you'd know that Yellowstone is my top priority. I did not start any of those conflicts. It was them.
When it comes to movies, Costner's most recent film was Let Him Go in 2020 with Diane Lane. His last time directing was in 2003 with Open Range.
Horizon: An American Saga will be coming out in two parts this summer. The first part is Chapter One and the second part is Chapter Two. The show features well-known actors like Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson, and Jena Malone.
