Kelsey Grammer reflects on auditioning for Han Solo in Star Wars, but ultimately missing out on the opportunity.
Grammar talks about his experience of meeting an agent and going through an audition for George Lucas. However, he never received any response from them. While watching Star Wars, he had a realization that it was the very movie he had auditioned for. Now, he contemplates whether he escaped a risky situation or missed out on a major opportunity.
In a recent interview on the In Depth podcast, Kelsey Grammer revisited his experience auditioning for the iconic role of Han Solo in the original Star Wars film. Although Harrison Ford ultimately secured the part, Grammer went on to achieve great success in the television sitcoms Cheers and Frasier, where he portrayed the intelligent and sophisticated psychiatrist.
How Different Would Star Wars Have Been With Kelsey Grammer As Han Solo?
Grammer talked about his introduction to an agent after he was expelled from Juilliard. Eventually, he got hold of the address for the Star Wars auditions coordinated by George Lucas. During their conversation, they contemplated his suitability for the Solo character instead of Luke Skywalker. However, he never received any response, and it wasn't until he watched Star Wars that he realized, midway through the movie, that "holy shit, this is that movie." Reflecting on the experience, he wondered if he had escaped a troublesome situation or missed out on a tremendous opportunity.
The character of Han Solo differs greatly from Grammer's familiar roles. Harrison Ford brings Solo to life, portraying him as a ruggedly handsome outlaw who only cares about himself and his partner Chewbacca. Despite his tough exterior, Solo's heart softens as he falls for Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher). Nevertheless, he remains a no-nonsense scoundrel, famously responding to Leia's declaration of love with the iconic line, "I know."

Given the iconic portrayal of Han Solo by Harrison Ford, it is challenging to envision the Frasier star assuming the role. However, Kelsey Grammer's portrayal of Frasier displays surprising similarities to Han Solo, albeit in a completely different manner. Like Han Solo, Frasier Crane exudes self-assurance and fearlessly expresses his thoughts and opinions, regardless of the recipient's reaction. Remarkably, he maintains a charm that appeals to a wide audience throughout this process.
The disparity between Han Solo from Star Wars and Frasier Crane from Cheers lies in the situations they face in their lives. Frasier exudes an air of pomposity and sophistication, whereas Solo thrives as a daring explorer unafraid of getting his hands dirty. Had Grammer been cast as Solo, he could have infused the character with the same compelling qualities that made Frasier immensely popular. Although Grammer's portrayal of Han Solo might have possessed its distinctiveness, particularly influenced by his on-screen chemistry with Carrie Fisher, the essence of the character could have remained intact.
