The latest installment of the Star Wars saga has sparked division among fans, and John Boyega has contributed to the ongoing discussions surrounding the portrayal of his character, Finn.
When Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released, it brought a refreshing change. Fans eagerly embraced a new trilogy with an array of fresh characters. The film stood out as the best among Disney's Star Wars movies, as it closely followed the familiar hero's journey seen in Star Wars: A New Hope, while also featuring beloved characters like Han Solo (played by Harrison Ford) and other iconic figures. However, over the years, scrutiny has befallen the trilogy. The three films lacked continuity in terms of directorship, resulting in an inconsistent overall vision. Certain character arcs were neglected, some more prominently than others.
Boyega has been vocal about his treatment in the Star Wars series, particularly the racism he faced from certain fans. Now, with more time and clarity, he explains what went wrong with Finn's character. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Boyega was asked if he felt a sense of ownership over his character, similar to how Carrie Fisher felt about Princess Leia. Boyega honestly replied, "I don't. Because I don't think Finn was as well-developed as those characters. There are so many unanswered questions about him that, at this point, they could probably do anything with him. You never know."
Finn's role in the Star Wars trilogy was overshadowed by the focus on Skywalker-related characters, particularly Rey. Despite initially being one of the main characters, Finn's importance diminished as the series progressed. The lack of development for Finn, including his potential as a Jedi and his relationship with Rey, was disappointing.
Finn, from Star Wars, was sadly one of the most disrespected characters in the saga, leading to a lost potential for his character. This is one of the reasons why the trilogy has not gained a beloved reputation. You can watch the Star Wars saga on Disney Plus.
