Joe Jonas Collaborates with Simu Liu for ‘Barbie’ Star’s Debut EP ‘Anxious-Avoidant’
Simu Liu taps Joe Jonas to co-write a captivating track for his first EP, 'Anxious-Avoidant,' showcasing their musical collaboration on this highly-anticipated debut release

Simu Liu, 34, showcased his diverse talents with the release of his debut album, Anxious-Avoidant. This four-song EP further solidifies his ability to excel in action-packed franchises, deliver captivating soliloquies, and showcase his songwriting skills. Released on Friday, November 17, it is clear that there are no limits to what Liu can accomplish.
"I worked alongside incredibly talented artists on this EP, resulting in four songs that I am eagerly looking forward to sharing with you," wrote the Barbie star on Instagram. The songs include "Don't," "If It's Time," "Break My Heart," and "Warm."
The song "Break My Heart" was co-written with Joe Jonas, who is known for his songwriting contributions to his bands, Jonas Brothers and DNCE.
Jonas assisted Liu in discovering his "artistic journey" in music. Liu expressed via Instagram, "These songs delve into my personal experiences, encompassing themes of love, sex, heartbreak, and depression, as I navigate through life. I invite you all to give them a listen this Friday, and I am immensely grateful to everyone who has been a part of my artistic journey."
Specifically, "Break My Heart" is a heartfelt ballad about a breakup.
"Your image fades, blurred and out of focus / Our love died within the walls of your living room," Liu laments in the opening verse. "Now I stand amidst the funeral of my heart / An event devoid of celebration or cheer. The band plays our cherished melodies / But you're absent, unable to hear my voice harmonize / For you fled, tears streaming, barefoot / Longing to transform into something we were never meant to be."
The inspiration behind this track remains undisclosed, yet both Liu and Jonas have endured heartbreak in recent times. Liu openly acknowledged his "breakup" in September 2022, shortly after his public relationship with Jade Bender. (The Marvel actor has since moved forward with Allison Hsu.)
Jonas initiated divorce proceedings against Sophie Turner a year later in September, after being married for four years. Both Jonas and Turner, aged 27, currently have joint custody of their two daughters: three-year-old Willa and 15-month-old Delphine.
While Turner has resumed dating, Jonas is choosing to take things slow. According to an exclusive source for Us, he currently has no interest in dating.
"He is directing his energy towards his music and his family. Joe is thriving and he thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Halloween with his daughters," the source revealed. "With a busy schedule balancing his career and his girls, he has no spare time for dating."
Currently, Joe is on a tour with his brothers Kevin Jonas and Nick Jonas, collectively known as the Jonas Brothers, throughout the United States. In 2024, the band has plans to extend their tour internationally under the name The Tour.
