Britney Spears' ex-husband, Jason Alexander, strongly disagrees with the allegations presented in her recent book, The Woman in Me, regarding their widely known Las Vegas wedding in 2004. Their short-lived marriage, lasting a mere 55 hours, occurred when both Spears and Alexander, longtime childhood friends, impulsively agreed to get married under the influence of alcohol, as claimed by Spears.
"After a few drinks, like any typical twentysomething, I found myself in bed with an old childhood friend whom I had known for a long time. On our third night together, both intoxicated, he and I ended up in a hotel room, watching movies like Mona Lisa Smile and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre until late at night. Then, we came up with a not-so-brilliant idea of going to A Little White Chapel at 3:30 am. Due to another couple getting married, we had to wait in line ourselves. Yes, you read that right - we actually waited in line to get married."
Continuing on, Spears explained, "Some have asked me if I had feelings for him. Let me clarify, there was no love between us. I was simply heavily intoxicated - and probably, in a more general sense during that phase of my life, bored."
In an interview published on Wednesday, October 25th, Alexander stated to TMZ that he and Britney Spears were deeply in love and were not under the influence of alcohol when they got married. This contradicts his previous statement in a 2012 interview with ABC News where he indicated that they had used "party favors" on the night of their wedding. When asked if he was referring to drugs, Alexander responded by saying, "Alcohol is a drug. Coffee is a drug. A cigarette is a drug. Yeah, we were doing drugs."
Spears, on the other hand, thinks her family's reaction to their nuptials was excessive, resulting in them pressuring her to annul the marriage merely two days afterwards.
"The following day, my entire family traveled to Vegas. They appeared and glared at me with intense anger in their eyes. I glanced around, puzzled. 'What happened last night?' I inquired. 'Did I commit murder?' they informed me. 'You got married!' they exclaimed, as if that could be considered even more terrible."
"They exaggerated innocent fun to an extreme extent. Everyone has their own perspective, but I didn't take it as seriously. I believed that a playful Vegas wedding was something people might do in jest," the Grammy winner expressed. "But then my family arrived and treated it as if I had started a major conflict. I spent the rest of my time in Las Vegas crying. 'I'm to blame!' I admitted. 'I'm so sorry. I should not have gotten married.'"
Nearly two decades after their wedding, which was later annulled, Alexander made headlines again in June 2022 when he tried to crash Spears' wedding to Sam Asghari. (Asghari, 29, filed for divorce from Spears just over a year later.)
"During an Instagram Live session, Alexander, who was present on Britney Spears' property, claimed that she had invited him and referred to himself as her first and only husband. He expressed his intention to crash the wedding and criticized the absence of family members, apart from Sam. Two months later, court documents revealed that Alexander was found guilty of aggravated trespassing and battery in August. This verdict was related to his arrest earlier in the year for allegedly stalking his ex-wife. As a consequence, he was sentenced to 128 days in Ventura County Jail. Additionally, a "no contact" protective order was granted to Spears and her security guard, Richard Eubeler, who had confronted Alexander at her residence."
In addition to her marriages to Alexander and Asghari, Spears was married to Kevin Federline from 2004 to 2007. The exes share sons Sean Preston, 18, and Jayden, 17.
