Hoda Kotb Opens Up About Daughter Hope's Health Scare: Reflecting on the Experience

Hoda Kotb recently shared insights on her daughter Hope's health scare, delving into the emotional journey in a heartfelt interview.

Hoda Kotb is finally talking about a scary moment involving her 4-year-old daughter's health.

Back in February 2023, viewers noticed that the Today cohost was missing from the show for about two weeks. When she came back, Kotb revealed that her daughter Hope, who she adopted in 2019, had to stay in the hospital and even spent some time in the ICU. While she didn't go into details about the specific reason for Hope's hospitalization, the experience continues to impact their family.

"We had a scary stretch," Kotb, 59, shared with People in an interview released on Wednesday, March 6.

Kotb, who was discussing her children's book, Hope Is a Rainbow, inspired by her daughter, added, "Any parent who has experienced a frightening situation with their child can relate. It's unimaginable to see your child unwell. You feel helpless, unable to protect her despite your efforts, which goes against our natural instincts as parents. It's a new and challenging position for me."

After returning home from the hospital, Hope and her family worked on adjusting to their new routine. They have managed to find a sense of stability since then. Hope is also a mom to 7-year-old daughter Haley, whom she adopted in 2017, and she co-parents her daughters with ex-fiancé Joel Schiffman.

Despite what has happened, Kotb is determined not to let Hope's condition be the sole focus. She wants to move forward without letting it define her.

"It's a tricky situation because I don't want Hope to be labeled," she said. "She's a vibrant kid, and most days everything is fine. I just don't want people to treat her differently."

Meanwhile, Kotb is trying not to let her worries affect Hope. She has brought in extra help to manage Hope's condition while juggling her busy schedule. Despite this, it's hard for the mom of two to relax, always on edge in case Hope's monitor goes off in the middle of the night.

Kotb believes that it’s important not to burden her daughter with worries. She prefers to show her care by asking how she feels and making sure she’s okay. Kotb wants her daughter to focus on being a kid and not have to deal with adult concerns.

For Kotb, faith has been a solid foundation for herself and her daughters.

The television personality shared that she often tells her daughter that God is everywhere, which has been comforting for Hope during a difficult period in her life. Hope feels protected and sometimes sees angels, which brings a beautiful moment for them both.

Kotb acknowledges that dealing with the medical scare has been tough, but she believes that the experience will ultimately benefit Hope as she grows older.

Kotb looked at her and thought, "Wow, you have grown into an amazing kid who is strong and ready for whatever challenges life throws at you." She became emotional as she continued, "She shows that with her determination and resilience, she can overcome anything. Despite facing difficulties at a young age, she will have a smooth adulthood ahead of her."
