Hilary Duff has a sense of humor — and she’s not afraid to laugh at herself.
How I Met Your Father star, 36, humorously replicated a memorable moment from her 2004 film A Cinderella Story backstage at Late Night With Seth Meyers on Thursday, November 9. In the original scene, Duff's character, Sam, replied to a text from her mysterious love interest (played by Chad Michael Murray) with "LOL," explaining that it meant "laugh out loud." This moment has gained popularity on social media in recent years, with many users reenacting the scene and using it for various contexts on platforms like TikTok.
Duff joined in on the fun before her Late Night appearance on Thursday. In a clip posted on the show's TikTok and Instagram accounts, Duff could be seen sitting backstage. A person off-camera knocked on the door and asked, "Hey, are you ready to chat with Seth?"
"Yeah, just let me send one text," Duff replied, typing on her phone and including, "LOL."
Fans wasted no time in recognizing the reference and expressing their admiration for Duff in the comments section. "Absolutely iconic," wrote one user on Instagram. Another fan chimed in, saying, "Well played, Cinderella. We appreciate the cleverness."

Duff conversed with host Seth Meyers during her interview, sympathizing over their limited knowledge of social media, particularly TikTok. Meyers, 49, humorously joked about their confusion, saying, "People say, 'I saw you on TikTok,' and I'm like, 'How do you even use it?'"
Duff then mentioned the A Cinderella Story recreation video, explaining, "Someone backstage requested that I make a TikTok, and I agreed as long as they took care of filming it. But honestly, I'm not skilled at navigating the app."

The Lizzie McGuire star also discussed her family during the show. She shared a funny incident where her 5-year-old daughter, Banks, selected a hilariously inappropriate birthday card for her in September. The card featured a birthday cake with the words, "Happy Birthday D—head," written in red icing. Banks' father, Matthew Koma, had previously posted the card on Instagram with a caption explaining that Banks chose it herself because she couldn't read.
During the discussion, Duff admitted that she was not expecting such an explicit card. She explained, "[My husband] told me that Banks got me the best birthday card. I was really excited... I thought it was going to sing to me or something. I was genuinely surprised."
Koma and Duff welcomed Banks in 2018 and got married one year later. The actress gave birth to their second daughter, Mae James, in March 2021. Duff also has an 11-year-old son named Luca from her previous marriage to Mike Comrie.
