World of Warcraft is launching its Classic Hardcore servers, where dying means the end of the character.
The WoW team is taking notice of the growing popularity of hardcore gameplay, and they are incorporating add-ons to assist players in monitoring and managing their progress. Responding to player feedback, the team has acknowledged the community's desire for self-found gameplay, where players can only use loot that they have personally acquired. This feature will be introduced in the future to enhance the gaming experience.
World of Warcraft is preparing to launch its Classic Hardcore servers this month. These servers will present players with the ultimate challenge: if a character dies at any point, that will mark the end of their time on the server. Recently, this style of gameplay has gained immense popularity, thanks to various add-ons that assist the Hardcore community in monitoring progress. The World of Warcraft team has taken notice of this growing community.
Moreover, the Hardcore challenge community has the option to implement additional gameplay rules. One prominent example is the "solo self-found" challenge, which restricts players from using any loot obtained through trading or the auction house. During a group interview, Senior Technical Designer Tim Jones and Game Producer Linny Cooke Severline were asked about the team's approach to self-found gameplay and the feedback from the community. They also shared some upcoming plans for Hardcore servers.
World of Warcraft Hardcore Plans to Implement Opt-In Self-Found Mode
There are different versions of self-found gameplay available for Hardcore players, including the option to form groups and agree on acceptable trading partners. This encourages more cooperative play in Hardcore mode, as friends can help each other craft items and share loot. Jones mentioned that World of Warcraft's Hardcore servers will take this into consideration when implementing self-found rules in the future, aiming to provide a familiar experience without the need for additional add-ons.
We understand that there is a demand for a self-found mode, and we do not want it to be purely solo. We acknowledge the various ways players prefer to experience the game, whether it be solo, in pairs, or in small groups, and we do not want to limit that style of gameplay. However, we do have plans to introduce an optional self-found mode at a later time. We are committed to listening to the community and delivering on their desires. The community's enthusiasm and excitement were the driving forces behind Classic, and we want to continue to listen and cater to their needs.
World of Warcraft is Making Changes Based On Player Feedback
The gameplay experience for players who venture into World of Warcraft Classic's Hardcore servers will witness slight variations in self-found gameplay. This is primarily because there have been changes made to the timers for dungeons. Unlike before, where dungeons under level 60 could be farmed for loot or gold, these dungeons will now operate on a 24-hour timer. Consequently, relying solely on dungeon farming for gearing purposes would not be a viable strategy. Instead, players will need to place more emphasis on crafting and actively seeking out quest-specific gear to enhance their chances of survival. Furthermore, accruing experience will predominantly occur in the overworld, as opposed to monotonously grinding dungeons.
Jones observed that the original plan for official Hardcore servers did not involve any rules other than "don't die." However, in response to a passionate community, the team has now decided to work on implementing additional optional features. Interestingly, the inception of both Hardcore mode and the preceding Classic era servers was driven by the community's strong desire for such functionalities. Classic servers provided by third-party sources had already gained immense popularity, and there has been a recent surge in the demand for Hardcore add-ons.
With the release of more information about Hardcore, we discovered a significant number of individuals who are enthusiastic about self-found gameplay. Initially, it wasn't something we had planned to include in Hardcore. However, due to the persistent requests from the community, including players creating YouTube videos, tweeting, and posting on Reddit, our dedicated community team gathers and presents this valuable feedback to us. We can relate to it as well. I, myself, have become addicted to watching WoW Classic YouTube videos during my daily commute. We actively listen to what the community wants, and this instance of catering to their desires is just one example of our commitment to investing time and effort into delivering options for players.
It is our hope that this exciting development will be well-received by passionate World of Warcraft fans who have been vocal about their desire for more diverse Hardcore playstyles. The game's developers appear to be increasingly inclined to implement features requested by players, and it will be intriguing to witness how the community continues to inspire future developments.
World of Warcraft is available on PC and Classic Hardcore servers go live on August 24.
