Warning! Spoilers ahead for Foundation season 2.
Summary
In the second season of Foundation, a vision belonging to Gaal proves to be incorrect as Salvor meets her demise at the hands of a mentallic, instead of the Mule as initially anticipated. Showrunner David S. Goyer sheds light on how this aligns with the show's overarching themes, exploring the notion of whether the future is predetermined or susceptible to alteration.
In season 3 of Foundation, the revelation that Gaal's visions are not guaranteed could have intriguing consequences, especially for characters who believe their destiny is predetermined. Showrunner David S. Goyer sheds light on why Gaal's (portrayed by Lou Llobell) visions of the future turned out to be incorrect and hints at the impact this will have on the upcoming storyline. Drawing inspiration from Isaac Asimov's source material, Goyer's popular series premiered on Apple TV Plus in 2021, quickly establishing itself as one of the most ambitious science-fiction shows in recent years. The much-anticipated season 2 finale of Foundation aired last month, unveiling a series of revelations and explosive events, including the death of Salvor (played by Leah Harvey).
Goyer discusses why he chose to have Gaal's visions of Salvor's death turn out to be inaccurate in an interview with Collider. See the full comment from the showrunner below:
"We introduced the concept of Gaal having the ability to see the future, and so far, everything she has predicted has come true. This implies a future that is predetermined, where the actions of individuals hold no significance. Another theme explored in the story is the question of whether everything is predetermined or if an individual's choices matter when compared to mathematical calculations.
"What intrigued me was the contrast between the probabilistic future predicted by psycho-history and the seemingly predetermined future that Gaal's visions revealed. When Gaal saw that her daughter would die on a battlefield 150 years from now, the audience assumed it to be a fixed fate. However, it turns out that this future is not set in stone, which I believe surprises and evokes emotions in the audience."
What Gaal's Incorrect Vision Means For Foundation Season 3
Gaal's vision of Salvor's death in a battle with the Mule 152 years later took an unexpected turn when she was actually killed by a mentallic under Tellem's control, played by Rachel House. This revelation challenges the belief that Gaal's visions, which had been accurate thus far, are not guarantees of future events. If the show is renewed for season 3, this notion could lead to intriguing developments.
The concept that the future is not predetermined holds particular fascination as it could ignite a sense of hope in characters who feel trapped by their predestined fate. With Gaal's newfound awareness that the future is malleable and influenced by external factors, she may take on a more active role in shaping events in Foundation season 3. Understanding the role of her visions within this existential dilemma could prove pivotal in the upcoming conflict against the Mule, a prominent antagonist in the Foundation series.
Apple has not yet confirmed if there will be a season 3 of Foundation. The recent end of the WGA strike suggests that an announcement could be coming soon. Although the future of the show is uncertain, Goyer has expressed his hopes for the series to continue up to a potential season 8. Gaal's latest revelation is expected to play a significant role in the ongoing narrative.
