Facing Adversity: 'RHOM' Star Guerdy Abraira's Triumph Over Breast Cancer

The Real Housewives of Miami' star Guerdy Abraira shares her inspiring breast cancer journey, triumphantly ringing the bell as a survivor

The Real Housewives of Miami star Guerdy Abraira is in high spirits after finishing her final round of chemotherapy. Speaking exclusively to We about the new season of RHOM, Abraira, 45, revealed that she is feeling almost like her old self healthwise. Despite gaining around 15 pounds due to steroids, Abraira is grateful for her life and considers herself a survivor of breast cancer.

Abraira, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in March, marked the conclusion of her treatment journey last month by participating in the traditional bell ringing ceremony. This significant milestone brought a sense of liberation and relief to Abraira.

"I was able to release all the worrisome energy that I had been carrying, filled with 'What if this?' and 'What if that?' It was liberating to feel free again and embrace a new version of myself. Now, I have adopted a new approach where I refuse to tolerate any nonsense from anyone. That should be my new slogan: 'I don't tolerate any nonsense from anybody.'"

She also mentioned that she is letting go of anything that no longer benefits her, stating, "This allows me to be more transparent with my emotions and not internalize the burdens of others. I often found myself playing the role of a problem solver, taking on unnecessary stress for the sake of helping others. But why should I continue to do that?"

Abraira discovered throughout her experience with breast cancer that it was acceptable to prioritize herself, a valuable recommendation she received from Martina Navratilova, the wife of her co-star Julia Lemigova. "Initially, it was challenging to put into practice, but now I have become proficient at it," she shared.

Fans will see the ups and downs of Abraira’s health struggles play out on RHOM season 6, which premieres on November 1.

She told Us that for her, it was a realization that although she knew the doctors assured her she would be fine in the end, she would have to endure a significant amount of pain. However, she remained determined to stay strong. Despite the fact that her cancer was not severe, she made the choice to allow her journey to be shown to others. She wanted to be the one to demonstrate the reality of the experience, as many people tend to hide from it. She questioned why there were no images online showing the effects of radiation burns on individuals with brown skin. She believed that by sharing her journey, she could fill this void and inspire others to share their stories as well.

Guerdy made the decision to share every aspect of her journey, the good, the bad, and the ugly, on television. She made this choice together with her husband Russell Abraira and their sons Miles, 14, and Liam, 9.

"Russell provided unwavering support, exceeding all my expectations. His dedication as my caretaker was truly incredible, and I feel blessed to have had him by my side."

When asked about the support she received from her RHOM costars, Guerdy hinted that viewers will have to tune in to see which ladies offered the greatest support. "Certain individuals surprised me with their reactions, but I understand that everyone has their own life experiences that shape them into who they are today," she shared. "It was unexpected, and while some people showed themselves in a negative light, I accept things for what they are."

The Real Housewives of Miami season 6 premieres on Bravo Wednesday, November 1, at 9 p.m. ET.
