Liverpool ended their pre-season fixtures on a high note, securing a convincing 3-1 win over recently promoted Bundesliga team SV Darmstadt 98 at Deepdale. Jurgen Klopp's team, who kick off their Premier League season against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Super Sunday live on We, quickly established a two-goal lead within the first eight minutes of the game.
Dominik Szoboszlai's corner was deflected by Luiz Diaz off Virgil van Dijk's boot, guiding the ball perfectly into the path of Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian striker calmly slotted home from close range, marking his second goal of the pre-season.

Salah then pounced on a mistake by Christoph Zimmermann to set up Diogo Jota to double Liverpool's lead.
However, Darmstadt, who secured promotion from Bundesliga 2 last season after being absent from the top tier of German football for six years, managed to close the gap just two minutes later. Braydon Manu's well-executed pass exposed Liverpool's high defensive line, allowing Mathias Honsak to deliver a precise finish that defeated Alisson.

Darmstadt briefly threatened an equaliser, with Zimmermann firing over from a corner, but the second period was one-way traffic.
Jota, speaking to the club's internal media, praised the team's strong start to the game and their effective pressing. He acknowledged that the opponent's goal was unexpected but considered it a valuable test as they enter the new season.
"We have numerous options available, with a wide array of games that require the participation of every individual. This collective effort aids us in pushing ourselves to our maximum potential.
Considerable efforts have been dedicated to refining our playing style. Our offensive capabilities have been showcased extensively, reflecting our identity. However, we aim to enhance our defensive performance as well, as we once again conceded today. Attaining clean sheets makes winning considerably simpler."
The start of the match was postponed for 15 minutes because the Liverpool team bus was caught in traffic on their route to Preston. This change of venue was necessary due to ongoing stadium renovations at Anfield. However, Deepdale had no available seats left as a few hundred fans from Darmstadt had attended the match. Klopp decided to deploy Alexis Mac Allister in a deeper position, where the Argentine showcased his abilities in commanding the midfield and solidified his position as Liverpool's new orchestrator of play.
Klopp commented, "He is an exceptional player both on and off the ball. We need to focus on improving and experimenting with various approaches. In a tight situation, Alexis certainly can play in that position. However, he should not be solely relied upon. Nonetheless, considering it was his first time playing in that role for our team, he performed admirably.
"The pre-season does not conclude after the initial Premier League match; it continues until the first international break. We have a few crucial training sessions remaining before facing Chelsea, and we must give it our all."
Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo were given the freedom to play in more attacking roles, and although they didn't score, it hinted that Klopp might line up his team this way against Chelsea on Sunday, with a more attacking approach.
During pre-season, Salah has contributed more assists than goals, but he displayed his predatory instincts with Liverpool's first goal in just the fifth minute. Meanwhile, Jota seems prepared to compete for a consistent place in the starting lineup, as he confidently doubled his team's lead with a precise finish only three minutes later.

There will remain question marks over Klopp's preference to play a high line as Honsak broke free from Van Dijk to halve the deficit.
"The Liverpool manager admitted that conceding again was a clear mistake. Although efforts have been made to address the issue, it cannot be instantly resolved. The lack of diagonal protection played a role, but we managed to score two goals from set pieces and another goal from a high press situation.
"I am satisfied with our team's physical condition. Moving forward, it is crucial to determine the right formation for the upcoming Chelsea game. Fortunately, no injuries were sustained, and that remains our top priority."
Trent Alexander-Arnold requires more time for development in his new versatile position, however, there were additional positives as Ben Doak made a notable impact in his brief appearance as a substitute.
Nunez should have scored in the latter stages when his close-range attempt was spectacularly saved by substitute goalkeeper Alexander Brunst-Zollner, before Gomez's follow-up was cleared off the goal line.
Mac Allister impresses in deep role
