Exploring Side Characters in Solo Leveling's Latest Chapters

Following a recap episode, Solo Leveling delves into the development and stories of its diverse side characters, offering new depth to the narrative.

Solo Leveling is back after the recap episode last week, offering a visually stunning addition to the series that shifts the focus away from the protagonist Sung Jinwoo. In episode eight, multiple plotlines are introduced, giving the side characters their time to shine and allowing the audience to see things from different perspectives. However, the episode still tends to over-explain things, a common habit of the show.

Even though there isn't much combat in this episode, the production value seems to have improved compared to the previous recap. With visuals that closely resemble the manhwa, episode eight of Solo Leveling brings a refreshing change of pace to the series, making it worth the wait for fans who appreciate the visual aspect.

Yoo Jinho – Solo Leveling Episode 8

It seems like Solo Leveling spends a lot of time explaining basic parts of the story, assuming the audience needs constant reminders. In episode 8, we once again hear about Jinwoo's reasons for wanting to become strong enough to survive the Demon Castle. This feels unnecessary, especially after the recap episode we just had.

Additionally, Jinho meets his father after reaching an agreement with Jinwoo. His father goes on a monologue about various basic aspects like the appearance of the Gates, the impact on the Hunter economy, and the role of the Hunter Association. He also talks about the immense wealth of the top five Guilds in Korea, which is new information for us.

Strength-Seeking Jinwoo Accepts Jinho's Offer to Form A Guild

According to Mr. Yoo, the Hunters Guild; Fame Guild; Knights Guild; White Tiger Guild and the Reaper Guild are the largest, with immense control over the Hunter economy. Jinho sees risk in his brother recruiting an S-Rank Hunter, not knowing that Yoon Beomgil has already set sights on S-Rank Cha Hae-In. This part was nicely done as we didn't see his face, but heard his voice and saw his name on a business card he offered her, showing that he's the Manager of the Personnel Department from Yoojin Construction. Since she's already in the White Tiger Guild, she rejects the offer and later shows the business card to Choi Jong In, who now knows of the looming competition.

Jinwoo agrees to help Jinho with the nineteen raids needed to become a Guildmaster. However, he insists on doing them alone, which worries Jinho as they would be the only ones in C-Rank Raids. Jinwoo then decides to follow Hwang Dongsuk's example and recruit six more members to form a complete party for the higher-ranked Raids. Jinho agrees to this plan and takes on the responsibility of scouting for the party members and the Gates themselves.

Many familiar faces return to the battlefield.

Later, Jinwoo finishes his Daily Task and goes above and beyond by opening the Cursed Random Loot Box. Inside, he finds the key to the Demon Castle Instance Dungeon. Now at Level 26, Jinwoo contemplates challenging the giant centipedes in the Penalty Zone, a task he previously failed to complete during his Daily Task. However, he is uncertain if he has what it takes to emerge victorious in a battle against one.

Jinwoo is pondering ways to level up when he gets an invitation to a D-Rank Raid from the Association. This episode of Solo Leveling takes the opportunity to explore the impact of being a Hunter on familiar characters. The traumas and fears of these characters are brought to light as we catch a glimpse of their daily lives.

One of the characters, Mr. Song Chiyul, is revealed to be an experienced Kendo Master who can still hold his own with just one arm. Despite being questioned by his faceless student about retiring, he sees his survival as a reason to continue contributing to society. Kim Sangshik, who has a wife and child, worries about his safety after a previous raid. The White Tiger Guild President, S-Rank Baek Yoonho, complains about an interview set up by Choi Jong In and discusses Yoojin Construction's attempt to poach Cha Hae In.

The focus on side characters in this episode offers a deeper look into their perspectives and motivations for the first time. Trauma plays a significant role as each character, including Baek Yoonho, has witnessed horrifying things as a Hunter. Episode 8 of Solo Leveling features visually stunning shots, including the use of 3D to render the top 5 Guild insignia. Five members of the Cartenon Temple Raid party respond to the summons for the D-Rank Raid, leading to heartfelt reunions between Jinwoo and Song, whom he deeply respects, and Joohee, who has been concerned for his well-being since a significant event.

For Joohee, being a Hunter isn't fully supported by her parents, leading to a strained relationship with them. Despite her fears, a discouraging phone call from a parent serves as the motivation she needs to confront her challenges.

Psycho-Pass?

Akane Tsunemori Lookalike – Solo Leveling Episode 8 - Psycho-Pass? - Sometimes, The Association Hires Convicted Criminals

It's fascinating to note the resemblance of the nameless lady with glasses from the Association to Akane Tsunemori, the main character in Psycho-Pass. Equally intriguing is the striking similarity of Kang Taeshik, the Surveillance Officer, to Shinya Kogami from the same series.

The Association sometimes enlists Hunters with criminal records for Raids when there aren't enough volunteers. Similar to the concept in Psycho-Pass, these felons are closely monitored while working for the state. While not a major detail, it adds an interesting touch, possibly as an Easter Egg. Episode 8 appears to be setting the stage for the next phase in the Solo Leveling anime, while also providing a deeper look into other characters without overshadowing more crucial plot points.
