Star Wars fans have some ideas on what weapons the Empire could have used that would have been more effective than the Death Star. It turns out the oppressive fascist regime had plenty of other options, and the rest of the galaxy may have been lucky they didn't use them to their full potential.
The planet-destroying Death Star remains among the most iconic pieces of imagery in Star Wars. It's not difficult to see why, as it and its subsequent variations regularly played integral parts in the story due to their virtually unfathomable levels of destructive power. But according to fans, there are a ton of other weapons the Empire could have used more effectively to push their agenda on the galaxy. The Empire may not be the greatest threat to the galaxy, but it could be with a few tweaks.
User Serdna87 asked a question on the Star Wars subreddit about a weapon that could surpass the Death Star. This question sparked a flood of responses from fellow users sharing their insights from various Star Wars stories. Some suggested the Starkiller Base from The Force Awakens as a superior option to the Death Star, with enhancements like greater range and fewer vulnerabilities. But are there more discreet alternatives to consider?

Starkiller base was different. It had a much longer range and didn't have a built-in self-destruct mechanism. They had to destroy it using conventional methods.
The real innovation came in practical improvements to the Empire's existing resources. This included upgrades to TIE Fighters, like Grand Admiral Thrawn's TIE Defender concept, and better armor for stormtroopers. The key idea was to design fighters and infantry with the ability to take a hit and keep fighting. This would give the Empire an advantage in any skirmish, as it focused on maneuverability over protection. With soldiers that could withstand multiple hits, the Rebels would have been outmatched. Additionally, investing more resources in local patrol garrisons would make the Rebels' hit-and-run tactics less effective.
"Better armor and weapons for stormtroopers
TIE Defenders or TIE Advanced as the standard starfighter."
I believe TIEs were already the fastest and most maneuverable ship in the galaxy. The problem was their lack of shields, which made them weak. If shields were added, it would have made it more challenging for the rebels during dogfights.
Instead of focusing on adding shields to TIEs, it would be more effective to invest resources and industrial capacity into local garrisons, light cruisers, and small patrol craft. These are the types of assets that are essential when fighting a galaxy-spanning guerrilla insurgency.
Other ideas were more playful, like the Sun Crusher, a non-canon weapon from the Star Wars Legends universe. This tiny ship, built at Grand Moff Tarkin's secret Maw Installation, was incredibly powerful. It could withstand a hit from a Death Star, fly through a Star Destroyer's bridge unscathed, and most impressively, trigger a star's supernova, wiping out entire planetary systems in one go.
"What about a ship that's invincible, smaller than a starfighter, and capable of causing stars to go supernova, destroying whole systems? And it could even pass through a Star Destroyer's bridge without a scratch!"
Sure, the Sun Crusher was destroyed by Jedi Master and resident hothead Kyp Durron in Kevin J. Anderson's novel Champions of the Force. This event is also mentioned in Michael A. Stackpole's book I, Jedi. However, it is important to note that this is no longer considered canon in Star Wars Legends.
This change in canon allows current Lucasfilm writers the opportunity to potentially bring back the Sun Crusher. The question arises whether any storyteller should be trusted with such a powerful weapon. It would be challenging to justify how the Empire or the First Order could have been defeated if they had access to such a destructive force.
On the other hand, considering the past failures with the Death Star, perhaps it is not entirely far-fetched to think that such a powerful weapon could be mishandled.

The article offers intriguing insights into the potential weapons the Empire could have utilized to enhance their dominance. The idea of upgrading TIE Fighters and stormtroopers' armor is practical, bolstering their resilience and effectiveness in combat. By investing in local garrisons, the Empire could have countered the Rebels' guerrilla tactics.
However, the concept of the Sun Crusher raises ethical concerns. Its immense power and destructive capabilities could have resulted in catastrophic consequences on a galactic scale. While it may be tempting to ponder the possibilities, such a weapon's potential for misuse and the subsequent consequences for the galaxy remain a chilling thought.
