Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduced an open world concept to the series, allowing players to explore the region at their own pace.
The leak season before Gen 9's DLC hinted at the reappearance of "regional fakes," with a possible transformation of a new Poison-type Pokemon into a Grass-type.
Riddler Khu, known for accurately predicting previous Pokemon releases, shared an image featuring four Poison-type Pokemon, implying that one of them might be the new regional fake form. Weezing seems to be the most plausible option due to past patterns and potential designs inspired by fruits.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet brought significant changes to the series, particularly with the introduction of an open world. Players can now explore Paldea at their own pace and leisure. Gen 9 also saw the emergence of regional fake Pokemon, unofficially named as such during the leak season prior to the games' official release. These regional fake Pokemon, including the Toedscool and Wiglett evolution lines, have now reappeared in the leak season preceding Gen 9's DLC. This time, a supposed "edible" Poison-type Pokemon is said to transform into a Grass-type, based on something that can be consumed, potentially a fruit. The source of this leak is Riddler Khu, who accurately predicted both Pokemon Legends: Arceus and the entirety of Gen 9, establishing their credibility. Khu shared a picture of four Poison-type Pokemon, prompting the community to speculate whether one of them is the alleged new regional fake form.
The Most Likely Pokemon Scarlet and Violet "Edible" Regional Fake Critter
The Pokemon in question include Weezing, Swalot, Drifblim, and Spiritomb. Drifblim and Spiritomb stand out because they are Ghost-type Pokemon, possibly suggesting that the riddle refers to losing Ghost rather than Poison. However, this would exclude Swalot and Weezing, which are pure Poison-types. Additionally, the shade of purple used by Khu in the leaked information aligns more closely with the Poison type, raising many questions. Nevertheless, it is worth examining the possible forms these creatures could take on and determining which one is more likely to be the answer.
So far, both regional fake evolution lines in Generation 9 have had their types inverted. For Wiglett, it is a Water type instead of the original Ground type of Diglett, while for Toedscool, it is a combination of Grass and Earth instead of Tentacool's Poison and Water. If we assume this pattern holds true, any of the critters listed by Khu that gain the Grass type would only be Swalot or Weezing, as it has already been established that Grass is the inverted type for Poison. Moreover, the Pokedex in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet provides another significant hint.
Swalot, Drifblim, and Spiritomb are all included in the Regional Pokedex for Gen 9. Despite DLCs taking place away from Paldea, it would be unlikely for any of them to receive a new form instead of Weezing. Although Weezing received some attention in Gen 8 with Pokemon Sword and Shield's Galarian Weezing, Gen 1 Pokemon are often favored for additional forms due to their iconic status. Meowth is a prime example, having obtained two consecutive regional forms in Gen 7 and 8.
Therefore, it would be logical for Weezing to acquire a new form in Gen 9, and there are various potential inspirations. Firstly, considering that The Teal Mask is set in Kitakami, a region in Japan known for its melons, it is conceivable to envision a Koffing and Weezing form resembling this fruit. Additionally, Nashi pears and Momo peaches could serve as excellent sources of inspiration. However, the most probable choice appears to be the Pokeberry, a toxic fruit that grows on branches and bears a resemblance to Weezing's natural form. While there is a chance that none of these creatures will be featured in the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLCs, Weezing stands out as a perfect candidate.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now for the Nintendo Switch.
