Fans eagerly anticipate Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, but behind-the-scenes obstacles may cause a delay in the film's expected early 2024 release date

The sequel to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set to be released in March 2024. However, there is skepticism from one animator who believes it cannot be done.

Despite the success of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, there have been ongoing rumors about troubles during production. Reports of high animator turnover, excessive working hours, and last-minute changes have led producer Amy Pascal to deny allegations of a toxic work environment. Pascal suggests that the animators were not adequately prepared for the demands of a large-scale production. Despite these rumors, Sony remains confident in releasing the next Spider-Verse installment in theaters by 2024. Given that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse left various unanswered questions, fans are eagerly anticipating the quick release of the sequel.

One unidentified animator disclosed to Vulture that achieving a 2024 release date for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is highly unlikely. Despite the fact that the release date is less than a year away, fans assumed that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Beyond the Spider-Verse were developed concurrently; however, this doesn't seem to be the case. As per the anonymous animator, the production phase of the third movie has barely begun. Considering that it took four years to complete Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the chances of an early 2024 release appear to be slim.

To ensure a timely release of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Sony needs to avoid repeating the mistakes made during the production of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The management of the previous film was reportedly disorganized, with directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson unable to finalize sequences without approval from Phil Lord. Moreover, the late changes made in the animation process posed a significant problem for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, resulting in exhaustive 11-hour workdays, seven days a week for the animators. Not only did this exhaust the team, but it also left no room to work on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Despite the challenges faced by Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Sony Pictures has not altered the release date. Fans remain optimistic about a prompt return to the Spider-Verse, but concerns regarding the treatment of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's crew continue to loom over the production and may impact the actual release date.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is set to swing into theaters on March 29, 2024.
