Highlights
The upcoming Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC, The Indigo Disk, will introduce a new Tera type, leaving players curious about its capabilities.
The Terastal battle feature enables trainers to alter their Pokemon's type during a battle, introducing intricacy to competitive matches. This novelty type, known as Tera, is speculated to have some relation to the Legendary Pokemon Terapagos, and its impact on moves such as Tera Blast and STAB abilities is still uncertain.
In the upcoming DLC, The Indigo Disk, for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, The Pokemon Company has hinted at the addition of a new Tera type. This teasing occurred during a three-minute trailer at the conclusion of the 2023 Pokemon World Championships, leaving players of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet curious about what this new Tera type entails in terms of battle abilities.
Introduced in the ninth generation, the Terastal battle gimmick in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet allows trainers to modify their Pokemon's type during a battle, adding an extra layer of complexity to competitive battles. Similar to the Dynamax raid battles in Pokemon Sword and Shield, the Terastal gimmick has enabled Pokemon Scarlet and Violet to offer a range of Tera raids, including an intense seven-star Tera raid against the unparalleled Mewtwo. As of now, there are 18 Tera types that align with each Pokemon type. However, with the release of The Indigo Disk DLC in Winter 2023, the number of Tera types will expand by one.
The name of the nineteenth Tera type has not been disclosed by The Pokemon Company at the time of writing. However, some details were hinted at in the trailer mentioned earlier. The battle menu icon for the nineteenth Tera type is a rainbow-colored shell, resembling the shell of Terapagos, the Legendary Pokemon from The Indigo Disk DLC. This suggests that capturing Terapagos might be the key to unlocking the new Tera type in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. It should be noted that the new Tera type is not exclusive to Terapagos. The Pokemon Company used Baxcalibur to imply that any Pokemon can have its Tera type changed to the new Tera type. How this new Tera type can be obtained in The Indigo Disk remains to be seen.
In battle, the new Tera type was observed to affect Tera Blast, aligning with the concept that the move's type changes to match the Tera-type of a Pokemon. Interestingly, the Dragon and Ice attacks of Baxcalibur in the menu displayed the same rainbow color as the Terastallize icon. This could potentially indicate to players of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet that moves which grant the usual same type attack bonus (STAB) may have some advantage when paired with the new Tera type.
With the introduction of the new Tera type and the inclusion of previous starter Pokemon in The Indigo Disk DLC, players of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet can anticipate exciting developments in the expansion. The confirmation of a specific release date remains to be seen.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now for Nintendo Switch.
