The PC version of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart has been confirmed to run smoothly on the Steam Deck, thanks to innovative technology that preserves its breathtaking visuals and engaging gameplay mechanics. This revelation has taken many by surprise, as it was previously believed that the game's stunning graphics and immersive environments could only be achieved on the lightning-fast SSD of the PlayStation 5.
Rift Apart's PC port success is part of PlayStation's ongoing endeavor to bring its first-party hits to the PC gaming realm. Insomniac, the developer, has confirmed that the newly-released Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart PC port is compatible with Steam Deck. Rivet and Kit, new characters introduced in the blockbuster shooter-platformer, made a triumphant return alongside the beloved duo of Ratchet and Clank on the PlayStation 5 in summer 2021. Initially exclusive to the PS5, Sony announced in May that Rift Apart would be making its way to the PC through Nixxes Software.
Insomniac's recent announcement about the PC port of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart has caused quite a stir. Many were surprised because Insomniac previously claimed that the game's impressive graphics and complex environments were only achievable with the ultra-fast Solid-State Drive of the PlayStation 5. However, the PC port of Rift Apart has found a way around this limitation by utilizing advanced technology such as DirectStorage 1.2 with GPU decompression. This allows the game to be played on regular HDDs without compromising its stunning visuals and unique dimension-hopping gameplay mechanics.
Interestingly, it has been confirmed that Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart can also be played on the Steam Deck. Insomniac made this announcement on their official Twitter account a day before the PC port's launch on July 26. In order for a game to be verified for the Steam Deck, it must meet four requirements: full controller support with appropriate on-screen input icons and an automatic on-screen keyboard when necessary, support for the standard Steam Deck resolution (1280×800 or 1280×720) with good default settings and clear text, compatibility without any warnings, and full support from Proton, if applicable.
PlayStation continues its effort to expand into PC gaming by releasing popular first-party titles. The PC ports of games like Death Stranding, Horizon: Zero Dawn, God of War, and Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered and Spider-Man: Miles Morales have been well-received. Now, with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart joining the lineup, fans are hoping to see more of the duo's past adventures, such as the 2016 Ratchet and Clank game, make their way to PC.
In the meantime, players can now enjoy the dimension-warping fun of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart on PC and Steam Deck. The portability of the Steam Deck makes it particularly appealing, and now that Rift Apart is officially Steam Deck verified, fans can take the latest zany sci-fi adventure of Ratchet and Clank with them wherever they go.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is available now on PC and PS5.
