The PC market has become a new focus for PlayStation, with popular titles such as The Last of Us Part 1 and Marvel's Spider-Man already making a name for themselves on the platform. Joining these hits is Insomniac Games' Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, which originally served as a major PS5 launch title. It's exciting news for gamers, although some may find it a strange choice considering that Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is the ninth installment in a long-running franchise that has never before been on PC. While this latest adventure is sure to find an audience, it may feel incomplete without the rest of the series, which could limit its mainstream appeal on PC.
Rift Apart Cannot Be the Only Ratchet and Clank Game on PC
The Ratchet and Clank franchise has been a beloved staple of PlayStation gaming for years, with its debut on PlayStation 2 being hailed as one of the system's best games. With a vibrant galaxy filled with charming characters and engaging gameplay, the series quickly gained a following and expanded with four mainline games and two spin-offs. Each title built upon the last, offering more exciting adventures that kept players coming back for more. This success established Ratchet and Clank as PlayStation mascots and it seemed like their adventures would never end. However, with the release of the Future Saga on PlayStation 3, the duo embarked on even wilder adventures that took advantage of the hardware. While the series faced a few bumps along the way, it continued to deliver hit after hit with four additional mainline entries and two new spin-offs. Although the franchise took a brief hiatus during the PS4 era, it made a triumphant return to the PlayStation family with the release of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart on PS5.
PlayStation's decision to release Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart on PC as the ninth mainline title appears to be a missed opportunity. While newcomers can easily jump into the series, longtime fans can appreciate the intricate details that have been built up over the past 20 years. However, with no plans announced for bringing the other titles to PC, players are left to experience the conclusion of a lengthy story without the benefit of the full series context. To fully appreciate the series in its entirety, Steam would be the ideal platform for every game to be launched on. This would allow PC players to experience Ratchet's search for Lombaxes, Clank's mission to fix time, and the thrilling adventures that have led up to Rift Apart. If PC is to become a new home for the series, then this should happen soon.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is available now on PS5 and will release on PC on July 26
