Speculation among fans is already buzzing about a potential character reveal for Mortal Kombat 1 at this year's Comic-Con. One popular contender is Ashrah, who gained fame during the game's 3D era. NetherRealm has already confirmed the inclusion of numerous classic Mortal Kombat fighters in their upcoming sequel/reboot. These fighters may either be fully playable combatants or supporting members of Mortal Kombat 1's new Kameo roster. The most recent Mortal Kombat 1 trailer showcased the ancient Lin Kuei clan, featuring beloved characters like Smoke, Rain, Cyrax, and Sektor. With the game set to launch this September, there is still ample time to unveil more fighters. Past rumors have suggested that NetherRealm may draw from the mid-2000s 3D titles to bring back warriors. A leaked roster from June, which included names from beloved Mortal Kombat titles such as Deception, Deadly Alliance, and Armageddon, indicates that some of these characters may already be confirmed for Mortal Kombat 1.
Thanks to recent teasers on social media, fans of Mortal Kombat 1 are speculating that another character from the game will be announced soon. According to the official Comic-Con website, actress Kelly Hu, who has been a part of the Mortal Kombat franchise for a long time, will be present at the designated panel on Friday, July 21, where her role in Mortal Kombat 1 will be officially revealed. In the past, Hu has lent her voice to villainous characters like D'Vorah and Sindel in Mortal Kombat 10. However, some fans believe that she may be playing the character Ashrah from Mortal Kombat Deception instead.
Their theory is based on the fact that Kelly Hu is already set to voice Ashrah in the upcoming animated movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match, which focuses on the character Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat 1. In the games, Ashrah is a demon who hunts her own kind, making her a wildcard in the ongoing battle between good and evil. This unique nature has made Ashrah a favorite among longtime Mortal Kombat fans, although she has not appeared in the series after Deception, except for a few Easter Egg references.
Kelly Hu's return in Mortal Kombat 1 is a delightful surprise, regardless of the character she portrays. However, fans of the older 3D Mortal Kombat games will surely rejoice at the reappearance of Ashrah after her prolonged absence. The rebooted timeline of Mortal Kombat 1 could introduce a fresh and intriguing perspective to Ashrah, similar to the transformations experienced by confirmed characters like Sub-Zero and Scorpion. Luckily, fans won't have to wait much longer as Kelly Hu's role as Ashrah will be unveiled at Comic-Con next Friday. Mark your calendars for the release of Mortal Kombat 1 on September 19, 2023, available for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
