Unfortunately, the upcoming story missions in Overwatch 2 will only release as part of the Invasion update in 2023, leaving fans of the game's lore with a long wait. The PvE content of Overwatch 2 has faced a series of controversies, including the cancellation of Hero Mode and skill trees, as well as the announcement that players would have to pay for permanent access to the story missions, which received backlash due to the prices of the Invasion bundles. Adding to the disappointment, the next set of PvE missions will not be available until 2024.
As mentioned earlier, this information originates directly from Overwatch 2’s executive producer. Content creator Emongg recently conducted an interview with Jared Neuss, shedding light on everything that will be included in the highly anticipated Invasion update. While Neuss shared intriguing insights about Season 6’s new PvP mode, such as the decision to not immediately introduce Overwatch 2’s Flashpoint into competitive play, thereby allowing players to familiarize themselves with it first, he also addressed the realm of PvE. Specifically, Neuss indicated that the upcoming set of PvE missions will not be released during Seasons 7 or 8, as their actual launch window is still undetermined.
With Overwatch 2 Seasons spanning several months, Season 6 is not set to begin until August 15. This means that players may not expect more missions until around March 2024 with Season 9, although this is purely speculative. Neuss, in an Emongg interview, explained that this extended wait is due to Blizzard's desire to gather community feedback on the three Invasion missions and the bonus London mission. By taking this feedback into account, Blizzard can work towards improving future missions by adding more mechanics or adjusting objectives that may not be as enjoyable as desired.
Initial feedback from Overwatch 2 content creators, such as KarQ, who had the opportunity to play the PvE early, suggests that this approach may be wise. KarQ gave the Invasion missions a rating of 6.5 in his initial impressions, noting that although the cutscenes and dialogue were impressive, the missions themselves were too easy and involved excessive amounts of standing and shooting. It is hoped that this feedback, along with additional opinions gathered after August 15, will contribute to strengthening the next chapter of Overwatch 2’s story.
In addition to fascinating details shared in the Emongg interview about Invasion, such as PvE being initially connected to Overwatch 2's battle pass system, this interview is definitely worth listening to for enthusiasts of the hero shooter. Although Blizzard shows dedication to delivering more PvE content, fans will have to wait a minimum of 6 months after Invasion to have the opportunity to experience it.
Overwatch 2 is currently accessible on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
