Almost nine months have passed since the early access release of Overwatch 2, yet the controversies surrounding the game continue unabated. Initially announced in 2019, Blizzard made grand promises of an extensive campaign mode complete with hero skill trees, immersive cutscenes, fresh heroes, maps, and gameplay mechanics. Although the company has delivered on some of these commitments, it has also disappointed fans in several significant aspects.
The most recent uproar surrounding Overwatch 2 revolves around the cancellation of the game's campaign mode. While PvE missions are still slated for inclusion, they will lack the intricate skill trees and progression system that fans had eagerly anticipated for a span of four years. However, true to form, Blizzard is attempting to compensate for this shortcoming by introducing a novel "Hero Progression" system, which brings both advantages and disadvantages.
The Pros and Cons of Overwatch 2's New Hero Progression System
The Hero Progression system in Overwatch 2, which will be introduced in August alongside the Invasion update, offers a new and improved way for players to level up their individual heroes. Unlike the first game, where players would only increase their overall level, Overwatch 2's Hero Progression system allows each hero to level up individually through a new set of stats. These stats can also be leveled up individually, providing a more detailed and immersive leveling experience.
As an example, Reinhardt's character sheet includes a wide range of statistics such as the number of games played, melee eliminations, successful Earthshatter stuns, and kills. Each of these stats can be improved through gameplay, allowing players to see their progress and growth as they continue to play.
This update brings a significant amount of beneficial content to the game. By simply playing Overwatch 2, players will be able to level up all of their hero's different stats. With each new level gained, players will receive a reward. Additionally, next to each statistic, there is a hero emblem that players can unlock. As players level up specific stats, the emblem visually improves, providing a sense of achievement and progression.
For players who enjoy keeping track of their stats, the Hero Progression system not only offers an abundance of statistical information but also rewards players for their effort and dedication.
On the flip side, the Hero Progression system in Overwatch 2 has received some criticism for its lackluster rewards. Currently, the only incentives revealed by Blizzard are emblems and name cards, which may not be enticing enough for dedicated players. After spending countless hours in the game, these rewards may become monotonous, leading fans to lose interest in the system. To enhance the system, it would be beneficial if players could unlock legendary or epic Overwatch 2 skins as they reach significant milestones with a hero. This would provide players with a tangible goal to strive for and add more excitement to their gameplay experience.
During the livestream introducing the Hero Progression system, Overwatch 2's director, Aaron Keller, mentioned that there will be no XP cap, allowing players to continuously level up their heroes' stats. While this decision was made to prevent players from feeling rushed and obligated to complete everything quickly, it also means that the Hero Progression system lacks a satisfying endpoint. This absence of a level cap and the absence of special skins to collect may discourage many fans from fully engaging with the system.
Overwatch 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
