Though not necessary for newcomers, Visions of Coleus offers an exciting escapade for series enthusiasts and acts as a tantalizing preview for the highly anticipated Season 3.
Crunchyroll, the streaming service, has announced that it will be hosting the OVA side story titled "Visions of Coleus" for the popular isekai anime That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. This exciting content will be available at the end of October for all fans to enjoy. Originally included with physical Blu-ray cases, the OVA serves as an interquel bridging the events of Season 1 and Season 2. Although it is a short story, it does not reveal significant plot elements for the future.
Nonetheless, for fans of the series who have been waiting to see more of Rimuru, this is the chance they have been waiting for.
New Slime OVAs Follow Rimuru on a Solo Adventure
According to Crunchyroll's official synopsis, Rimuru has successfully rescued the children he was teaching in the Kingdom of Engrassia, signaling the end of his tenure as a teacher. However, his respite is short-lived as Yuuki, the Grandmaster of the Free Union, tasks him with uncovering the truth behind the power struggle for the throne in the Kingdom of Coleus. Positioned between Engrassia and the Holy Empire of Lubelius, Coleus is not only embroiled in a fierce battle for succession but also entangled in a complex network of demon and vampire conspiracies. In order to accomplish this mission, Rimuru assumes the alias "Satoru" and infiltrates Coleus.
Visions of Coleus has an interesting release history. Originally written by Fuse, the light novel's author, it was included as a bonus in each Blu-ray disc for the second season of the animated adaptation. Eight Bit, the responsible studio, recognized its potential and decided to adapt it into an OVA consisting of three episodes. Crunchyroll announced that it will stream Visions of Coleus on October 31, with the Japanese airing on November 1. This is the first Slime anime in a while, as Season 2 concluded in 2021 and Season 3 of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is set for release in the spring of next year.
Given that the story's premise revolves around Rimuru venturing alone to an isolated and unrelated location, without the presence of the main story's secondary characters, it is unlikely that Visions of Coleus will be considered essential for new isekai fans. Essentially, the OVA is a true "side story." However, it serves as a great appetizer leading up to the upcoming season and, at the very least, provides a condensed adventure for fans who may not have the energy to watch or rewatch all 48 episodes of the slime's previous escapades.
Despite the continuous release of isekai and fantasy anime, including popular titles like Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, it is refreshing to see a story that was previously constrained to a physical disc now available to a global audience. The fact that Crunchyroll managed to air it internationally almost simultaneously with Japan demonstrates both its influence and the enduring popularity of Slime, despite a lengthy hiatus and a Covid-19 induced delay in the current season. As such, fans of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime should definitely keep an eye on Crunchyroll for the upcoming release of Visions of Coleus.
