Eva Mendes expressed her mixed feelings about the month of April, but highlighted that her "biggest blessing" was the birth of her and Ryan Gosling's daughter, Amada, on April 29, 2016.
The actress, aged 50, took to Instagram on Monday, April 1, to share her thoughts. She posted two pictures of herself outdoors and wrote, "Oh April, I have such a complicated relationship with you. Tomorrow would have been my brother's birthday... and in a couple of weeks is the day we lost him." (Mendes' older brother, Carlos Mendez, passed away from cancer on April 17, 2016 at the age of 53.)
Mendes wrapped up the post by sharing, "But then, in late April, we received the greatest gift of all - my little girl was born 8 years ago. April, you frustrate me. But I can't help but adore you even more."
Following Mendes' heartfelt message, fans quickly flooded the comments section to share their own feelings with the talented actress from Fast Five.
“I feel the same way for July. Lost my dad in July and my mama and son is born in July️️” one user wrote.
Another user added, “your April is my November.”
"My brother was also born and passed away in April," another user shared. "April and I have a love-hate relationship."
In addition to Amada, Mendes and her partner Gosling, who has been with her for a long time, also have a 9-year-old daughter named Esmeralda.
Mendes and Gosling, although usually private about their personal lives, have occasionally shared insights about parenting. Mendes once shared on Instagram in March 2023 some valuable parenting advice she follows. She expressed her desire for her children to feel comfortable turning to her for help when they face challenges in the future. Mendes emphasized that she wants her kids to trust her and be able to confide in her about anything.
She continued, "I always try to connect with them, especially during tough times when I don't feel like it and would rather be upset."
During a July 2022 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Gosling shared that his daughter Amada is not afraid to speak her mind. He recalled a family trip to The Louvre in Paris, where she boldly expressed her opinion by giving a thumbs down in front of the Mona Lisa.
He continued, "I asked, 'Why?'" He then mentioned that she responded with, "Because it is not good." He also shared that she sometimes gives a thumbs down gesture behind her back before walking away from a room. He jokingly referred to it as the 'Thumbs Down Walk-Away,' comparing it to something at the level of a Roman Emperor.
In a late March interview on the Today show, Mendes expressed that becoming a stay-at-home mom was an easy decision for her, saying "it was like a no-brainer."
"I feel really fortunate. I thought to myself, what if I could spend more time with my kids - I'm still working, just not acting because that usually involves traveling for shoots. It's like an unspoken agreement that he [Gosling] will work and I'll work, but I'll stay closer to home."
